MERRY CHRISTMAS!

A classic, if slightly surreal, moment from American television. I hope that everyone gets wherever they're going safely and has a wonderful time.  Thank you for being my online family.

Just need a freshly ironed pinny, and I'm ready for spud peeling duty.

May be back later to see if anyone's still here / still sober. Enjoy your day, everyone.

  12. Just off to Botanic Gardens beautiful beautiful day in Glasgow hope you're all having a good time.

I love it that Jess has an 'ecrush' on Lord Summerisle. Surely her job is to chase straw men rather than wicker men.

  13. Well, Christmas plans here are being scuppered by the weather -- even mine. We've been slammed with an unexpected snow, which is sitting on top of a layer of ice, which is sitting on top of the snow that we got two weeks ago. There is a drift just outside our front door as big as the one I showed you a photograph of from the other storm, so even I will not be able to do what I planned today, seeing as how it involved multiple trips to the laundry room and garbage skip.

The joys of life on the prairie. Still, hope you're all having lovely Christmases. (4 pm there -- I'm guessing most of you are in the thick of the festivities now?)

  14. Never mind Montana, apparently you were meant to do nothing today.

We, the over-fed / well-oiled / mellow of my household here, are heading for the 'slumped in front of TV' part of the day. But first I have to go and feed the mice (there are now 2) in the garden.

    Laters.

  15. Here's this, for anyone getting up in the small hours. Chopin was a pig of a man, especially to his wife and family, and he wrote a lot of insincere and occasionally florid crap, but I always thought the Nocturnes were out of this world. Just as confusing as people, and there are no more confusing people than family.

  16. Hey, BW! It's only 19:30 here, you know.

Happy Christmas (although it's officially Boxing Day for you now...)!

  17. It's just the time of the year, Bitterweed - everyone knows that Christmas Chopin can be a pain in the arse.

  18. Then Happy Xmas again Montana !

  19. Bitterweed, confusing family? Every year I think I'm the most screwed up one, then I meet up with people who really believe they are sane and I question my sillyness.

How's your day getting on, with all the snow, Montana?

  20. The Lady was on a late tv show here so I thought I'd better have special Christmas song from her for dearest Montana.

    a song for Montana

  21. Sorry about that Montana - but it worked at second attempt!

Some warming rain at last her in Yorkshire - me water pipes have thawed for the first time in a week, water is precious, the more so when it's in short supply.

  22. Sorry, Bitterweed, too many cracker jokes read.

  24. My mam liked that song - I had no idea until I just noticed it that it was written by Charlie Chaplin!

  25. Night BW - Your not working this night are you habib our kid?

  26. Afraid so, and very very drunk. Can I tell you that you reminded me of something a few christmases back? Someone played the film Fiddler on the Roof and my mum had a tear rolling down her eye because of this song.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thank you for that, Deano! I still love Pet.

I'm just fine for now with the snow -- I stayed home all day. Was a bit of a pain for the sprog getting from the flat to his grandfather's car to go over to their place for Christmas dinner, etc. The service that is supposed to come plough the snow from the parking lot and clear the snow off the pavements didn't show up until late afternoon and only ploughed a strip straight down the middle of the parking lot and made no attempt to clear pavements once they did show up.

Pretty sure my car will need a jump start before I'll be able to drive it again, though -- that is, once I've managed to get the snow and ice cleared off of it and shovel away the pile of snow that the plough will leave once they've come back and actually done the half-assed job of it that they normally do. Today they did an eighth-assed job.

  28. God when a lass sings to me in a foreign tongue I'm hers. No discipline that's my problem....

  29. Oh, that song just put a tear in my eye, too. Also reminds me of an elderly Indian couple that I met a long time ago -- first people I'd ever met who'd had an arranged marriage. They'd been married for something like 40 years and were so cute together -- teasing each other and even kind of flirting with each other. After awhile, I commented on how lucky they were that they'd ended up loving each other so much. The woman said something to the effect of "Oh my dear, it wasn't luck. We didn't have any choice. We either had to learn to love each other or be miserable for the rest of our lives. It was easier to love each other." Isn't that sweet?

  30. "Today they did an eighth-assed job."
    Oh, the aspiration!

In my defence I am only doing this because some git didn't show up. All you have to do is it hit the f12 button evry 35-40 minutes, so that the boxing day prices are right.

  31. You know jet lag? well, this is pissed lag. or satellite delay and drunken fool wey hey!
    Hey that rhymed!

  32. Habib - a strange reality is that in final chapter(s) of life many older couples reach the same conclusion as perhaps your mam did - on the other hand many shed a tear at the reality of the lost oportunity. I hope it was the former for your mam!

I had to get a new battery for my car when the recent cold spell came Montana. That's a new phrase for me - "an eight-assed job"! I loves it, I'm already practising rolling it around my mouth in preparation for a new year complaint at some hapless soul.

  33. Montana, it is sweet. Deano I wish could comfort your hope. But we all know, some men can be right bastards. For another time, eh?

So come on, another sad song that makes you sob...
sticking with Topol, my kids are growing up.

  34. I had a great Christmas day with my kids and sometime wife. Together with my daughter in law's brothers there were nine of us around the table.

We were fortunate to have had an excess of food and drink to go around. The cooking this year was done by youngest son with the usual problem - it is impossible in a small UK kitchen to cook a dinner with a turkey and a duck and six different vegetables and three different stuffings and pigs in blankets and get it all to the table whilst its is still hot.

It was a very fine attempt though - hats off to the cook. It was still grand and we all enjoyed it.

I got some great presents - a pocket sized dab radio so I can have my favourite radio station

    Classic FM

on whilst I am out with my dogs. I don't think you have a radio station quite like that one in the USA Montana - I think you can stream it to your computer. It's just lots snipets of some great classical music, I enjoy the easy listening..

The joke of the day? - my youngest's partner, Liz, had obviously listened carefully to the rhythms and jokes of our family this year -- she had tracked down and had had framed a photo of my man of the year Frederick Furnivall. I was much pleased.

Lots of books too so plenty to read in due course.

  35. Well dear friends this man must get a little sleep.

Boxing day is a really heavy drinking day in my clan we all go on a long pub crawl around wherever we have met up for Christmas.

This year, inter alia, we shall all be getting poorly here:

    a fine Yorkshire Ale house

a pub in which the good citizens of Hull met in the civil war and decided to tell the King to fuck off he wasn't having access to the arsenal that was stored `at Kingston-upon-Hull. I shall be supping (hard) in the "plotting room" on the morrow so I had best get some rest.

Night friends. Hope your day has been at least tolerable.

  36. Taking a little time to find the sleep, so a toast to absent friends. \0/ -- /0\

The first Christmas for me in which I didn't have at least one of my beloved sisters alive and no more my bestest man Steve...

    To absent friends..

  37. I'm sorry that I wasn't here for your toast, Deano. I'll pour myself a bit of the Irish cream that's been sitting in my fridge for a couple of months and have a small toast to your sisters and Steve before I toodle off to bed.
