Amnesty and Modding Changes

Looking forward, i feel we should start thinking about our other fallen comrades and what can be done regarding a CiF Amnesty, possibly coinciding with the new modding policy and also modding in general. I dont know what is in store with this new modding policy but since its going to be put on the table by the CiF team, it might be an idea for people to try and work up some firm ideas for what we, as one part of the "community", would like.

I wont be able to take part in the modding thread but i think there should be a concerted effort amongst ciffers to try and negotiate some sort of amnesty for the fallen, the untrusted. I dont know if this is possible but it would be a fantastic gesture from CiF and go a long way to rebuilding a harmonious community spirit.

I would also argue for (though im happy to change tack according to majority wishes) a move away from permanent bans to long term bans, 1, 2, 4, 6 months bans, for example, depending on the crime. Not instead of premod, but on top of premod as an additional tool. Permanent banning is the equivalent of capital punishment - i dont think its very civilised. Casual posters will just make new monikers, BNPTroll will become BNPKnuckleScraper, or was it endogame, i dont remember, but it does hurt regulars and it certainly gives a slightly unpleasant and, dare i say, oppressive atmosphere.

I also think something needs to change with the "report abuse" function. I feel some people are using this button to distort and censor in quite a shameless and cowardly way. Maybe limit users to X number of reports a day, or keep a record of how many reports each user is making - the Graun can then spot posters who are perhaps abusing this function, as these people are contributing to a highly oversensitive atmosphere that is at the heart of the problems.

Anyway folks, these are my suggestions and i hope we can try and build some sort of consensus before the modding thread.

(And thanks again to all for your help these last two days)

  1. I actually am very surprised that the mods have ended up being at least a wee bit fair with you jay... I didn't expect it, especially after Matt came on the Talk thread and said he supported yr banning... which is why I stormed off in a huff. I'm still not sure I want to go back, although I will consider contributing to the mod thread when they finally put the damned thing up. I'd be happy if the mods/powers that be would agree that all those who've been banned be given an amnesty at the end of may... and I wouldn't mind if it was contingent on banned posters getting in touch with the mods.. I don't mind deletions, pre-mod or even temporary bannings... but permanent bannings except under some circumstances (persistent trolling?)are just beyond the pale... I can put up with a bit of hypocrisy here and there (few of us are totally squeaky clean)but the past 2 days have more than just tested my patience... and Jay... don't change too much... just avoid calling anyone a cunt...

  2. Not sure if it's worth the hassle, Jay, but good luck with it if you want to go back there.

  3. Sounds like an eminently sensible set of proposals. I have also proposed in the past a scale of reasons why a post has been deleted e.g 1 = offensive language, 2 = bullying or whatever so at least we know why our post has disappeared.

  7. Oh yeah, the modding thread..what happened to that? Bank holiday weekend...perfect opportunity to put it up, or maybe the schedule's just too tight to squeeze in an unplanned thread. Most probably, the running order's drawn up months in advance to accomodate all that Oxbridge "I'm so random" shite.

Anyway, bit of Milton for ya; another enjoinder against the insidious lure of self-moderation for anyone who feels the pull:

  10. Jay,

Glad to hear you'll be back.

To be honest, until I read this, & the WDYWTTA thread, I thought it'd all been down to someone deciding to hit the abuse button on Ally's porn item.

I did find it ironic that on a day when you should have been banned on a day when you had been making quite well argued contributions to a thread that had opposition to censorship as its basis.

It is one of the most annoying things with Cif, that the mods appear to be selective in their application of the rules.

As has been mentioned by others, I find it difficult to understand the way in which it is possible for quite rational, well reasoned comments to be deleted; often with their only crime being that they are either in disagreement with the editorial line, whilst others are permitted to post what amounts to the written equivalent of hate speech.

I guess the answer is to either become a drooling sychophant or to only make wild allegations/vent one's spleen in an outpouring of vile abuse in a way that appears to back those who's thoughts on an issue are in favour.

(Must say, Scherfig & Thaumaturge, loved the comments directed at BTH & Ultima, following their, later, much denied gloating.)

    Roll on the Modding thread.

Anyway, here's looking forward to your return.

  11. I'm with monkeyfish, pretty pissed. I've got this home-made cider thanks to Monsieur cousin, which is getting me through later with Jools.

Oh, here come Depeche Mode, fuck they still sound like the 80s.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't know if it's the cider, but that was pretty fucking cool.

Jesus, Sonic Youth are there too. And now mockney Lily Allen with the shortest skirt imaginable.

  14. A Flock of Seagulls might make a return, too. But I thought the DM song was cool. Is it the cider, Monkey, or was it fairly cool?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hahaha! Sonic Youth look as old as a 1950s skiffle band! No change in the sound then (but quite entertaining).

Jay - I'm so happy that you'll be back again soon. I hope Hank & Monkeyfish will consider a word to the mods, too.

Bought myself a 6-pk of Vermont cider tonight to indulge in some rare pissed posting with all of you. What time tomorrow should I start drinking it so that I'll have a good buzz going at the same time the rest of you are around? Or should I save it 'til next Friday & start drinking as soon as I come home from work? (Had errands to run tonight and it's already midnight for most of you. If I drink it tonight, you'll all be sleeping by the time I'm buzzed.)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Good suggestions.

I'm about to get absolutely shitfaced as part of my 'last night of smoking'. Please ignore anything I say later, and apologies if I get really angry over the next few days.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Montana, best get pissed early on tomorrow afternoon (evening our time). That way, it all coincides.

    Sealion, you're giving up smoking?

Btw, the second Depeche Mode song was rubbish. But Mr Raphael Saadiq will most definitely collaborate with Solange at some point.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Dunno. The second one was OK: touch of Floyd. Or so I just remarked to M.Fish who then shot me a scathing glance that had 'shut up you wanker' all over it, so I guessing my critical faculties are a bit wide of the mark.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Your missus has got to be right... surely?

  22. Yeah, I said May 1st when it was a long way off, and now its here. I really need to, though. Heart disease runs in my family so I probably shouldn't give it any help.

You going to the may day riot?

    ReplyDelete
  23. The thing about DM is that their songs are always 'ok', but just so repetitive. I suppose it had something of Floyd about it, though I struggle to remember (Coming back, was it called?).

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sealion, no, not going sadly. I am going (kill me) on a long walk tomorrow morning in the countryside where I will complain for 3 hours running about how painful the headache is.

  30. "I have also proposed in the past a scale of reasons why a post has been deleted e.g 1 = offensive language, 2 = bullying or whatever so at least we know why our post has disappeared."

I discussed this with them ages ago, they said no because it would potentially smear/'libel' posters - for example, you have a post removed labelled "racist", if someone doesnt think their comment was racist they are gonna hit the roof. That was their reason for turning the idea down.

"Not sure if it's worth the hassle, Jay, but good luck with it if you want to go back there."

Depends entirely on what, if any, changes are made to the thing and the amnesty. Things have got pretty bad so quite a drastic change of tack would be needed.

Ignore BTH Kiz, he really isnt worth your effort; to be known more for your sycophancy than your posts says it all.

"I want you back on cif... (and hank...)"

Absolutely, today was something of a hollow victory if everyone else is still permanently banned.

Cheers GP01, hopefully a little victory on the way to some bigger ones.

"I hope Hank & Monkeyfish will consider a word to the mods, too."

Indeed, though i think the modding thread is an important point because without real changes to the process it wont be long before we're all banned again. I dont know what time you need to start drinking Montana but the general rules over here state that drinking commences upon leaving work, and finish when you go to bed. How many hours behind are you, 5? Get on it as soon as you finish work i would.

"You could always just have the one wildhack? I always start out on that principle...."

One bottle or one glass, Kiz?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well, I'm six hours behind you. If I start drinking tomorrow @ 3pm, my time/9 pm for you - will that put me about right? As infrequently as I drink, I figure I'll start feeling buzzed mid-way through my second one. (See, if I do it this way -- I won't be drinking 'alone' even though I'll be alone -- right?) How many of you will be around tomorrow?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sealion - yeah, I've noticed the disappearance of some of my favourite videos, too. Tried to find the vid for TMBG's "Ana Ng" the other night & there were only live & cover versions. The original promo video was gone. Bummer. Donald Fagen's "New Frontier" is gone, too. That was one of my favourite vids in the 80s. (Song & vid had to go together. Song on its own - just so-so.)

  56. Looks like I missed a helluva party...

Just been over to the "Whaddya want" thread and ultima's clearly got out of bed the wrong side this morning, Jay.

Montana - I shall be arriving around 6pm with my friend Stella and the wine, Bitterweed's sorting the music out.

Kiz and others - unlike Jay, I didn't get an email from the mods confirming my ban so I don't think there's much scope for debate to be opened with them. I shall be interested to see what Seaton has to say when he finally gets round to posting the moderation thread and I might be prepared to meet him halfway but...

Even though Jay's been reinstated, there's a sickly smell around the place and, with each passing day, I'm less interested in going back.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Two consecutive posts - both calling for Jay's ban to be upheld and repeating the nonsense about his abuse of Cath

  58. Can't believe that ultima has a long rant about Jay's predilection for personal abuse and then drops in a line about it being no surprise that he has a "problem with women". Sounds like personal abuse to me.

And if she's that concerned about Jay "stalking" her, it might be best if she kept a dignified silence about his ban/reinstatement.

    ReplyDelete
  59. As well as ultima's malicious stalking claim, she actually said this to annetan:

Why is she allowed to continue to get away with hurling abuse & misrepresentation of others around when people who's main only real crime seems to be that they argueideas that don't gel with those of the chosen few too well get banned or deleted?

I won't go into details, but I've already spent about a half hour dealing with a woman who was apparently in a call centre in Bangalore. I don't have a problem with the theory of call centres in Bangalore, in fact, I'm quite happy about it on one level. But the reality is that, when you're on the phone about something that could be a bit of a sticky customer service issue under the best of circs and you add into that the frustrations of her not understanding my accent very well and me not understanding hers and that weird time lag you sometimes get -- well, how many times do I need to give her my name & address and have her read it back to me incorrectly before I become irritated? And if I'm being told that I will not only be inconvenienced by the situation, there is nothing they can or will do to compensate me for that inconvenience, am I being a racist bitch if I display my irritation? Dammit, dammit, dammit.

  78. Jesus, ultima - astonishing. "Stalking her"? For anyone in any doubts as to whether this is harmless, eccentric old lady or a malicious, scurrilous little liar - the WDYWTTA should clear this one up for good. Nasty piece of work. And virtually never gets modded. Pathological liar and extremely spiteful.

    Cath Elliott - thank you!!!!

Ultima doesnt usually reutrn to threads after she has been caught out lying so thats probably the last of her posts. 85. Jay - I love you, too, sweet pea! Just had a bit of a go at BTH. Had to censor myself quite a bit and I'm still not certain it'll stay up. He said:
Excuse me if I intervene in this gathering which seems to have promoted the villain of the piece and roundly turned on Ultimathule, who didn't even join this thread until this morning, when she put in a plea for WML, rather than responding to the following, spat at her by PlanG at 5:45 on April 30th: I've edited for brevity And finishes with: What is happening here is a nasty piece of scapegoating of Ultimathule of the most objectionable kind and it isn't at all nice.To which I replied:

BTH - does the fact that you are in a very small minority (one consisting, essentially, of you, Ultima, and one or two infrequent posters), not give you any pause to consider that perhaps you're wrong? That, maybe your sycophancy to the sisterhood might be colouring your perceptions just a wee bit? Consider the fact that Kizbot, who was a firm defender of Ultimathule until fairly recently, is no longer pleading for some forbearance from the rest of us on Ultima's behalf. This whole "Ultima vs. Jay" nonsense has hinged upon Ultima either misunderstanding a discussion on Cath's blog and now refusing to admit that that is what happened or a deliberate misrepresentation of that discussion on her part. THAT is what is objectionable and nasty. The only person around here who is making Ultima look bad - is Ultima.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Well, I've just visited the WDYWTTA thread. Ultima's post questioning whether Annetan42 is a woman and having a dig at Jay's sex life is still standing. So's the one where she accuses Jay of being a "serial liar" who "consistently misquotes people". Not only that, but BTH, chivalrous to a fault, is complaining that people are picking on her.

I'm glad they've seen sense and rescinded Jay's ban (eventually), but even if they lift the bans on all the others I don't think I can go back. It seems if you can be even loosely described as a feminist, you get a free pass to be as outrageous, offensive and mendacious as you like, and the rules, sorry "community standards", only apply to the rest of us.

Oh for somebody on the liberal/left end of the political spectrum who can gain any sort of power without turning into a totalitarian and shutting down dissent.

St Johnstone back in the SPL for the first time in the lifetime of my 7 year old son.

I started drinking approximately one hour ago, and don't intend to stop until we get relegated again.

    So, 12 months then...

    ReplyDelete
  91. Congratulations, Ally. I look forward to a year of drunken posts from you.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Congrats, Ally. Will raise a glass of plonk later...

    Actually, sod it, it's 6pm, sun's over the yard-arm... I'll open it now :o)

  93. Until now St Johnstone's only claim to fame was being the only club in England or Scotland with a J in its name. Now we can add it has a celebrity fan.

    Enjoy your drink, Ally (-:

    Way ahead of you, BB...

    ReplyDelete
  94. Dammit, you guys, it's only noon here and I've got errands to run yet. I can't start drinking now. Pace yourselves a bit, okay?

    ReplyDelete
  95. Congrats, Ally. I'm quite content with a comfortable 11th place in League One myself...

BB, that has made me laugh. A whacky raving leftie-lawyer; the UK does produce some eccentricity....

  99. Blimey, montana, just seen your latest response to BTH. Can't wait to see what you post after you've got through that case of cider.

    Evening olching, good walk? Lovely day for it. I've posted some links to some proper music above. No Queen tonight, I'm afraid, not here anyway. BTH is but a post away though (-;

    ReplyDelete
  100. Btw, somebody might want to tell TravisChar that Whitt the poster hasn't been banned (afaik) and that the Whitt in my post was in fact Brian Whittaker who occasionally pays us a visit here.

I have tried to post an explanation but it may take some time, it being Saturday night, the pride of Perth have just been promoted, and there is general rejoicing throughout the land...

    ReplyDelete
  101. Oh, god, Hank. I might be dangerous after I've had a few. Could go down in history as the first woman banned from Cif without ever being sent to pre-mod first! I really wanted to call him a gurning fuckpig (thanks for that phrase, Bitterweed), but somehow I thought that might cross a line. And he can't be a queen. I've known lots of them and none of them would've brooked that slimeball's stupidity.

  102. The walk was fine, Hank.

  112. I fancy them to beat Chelsea. Although that might deprive me of the absolute joy of seeing that prat Terry miss another crucial penalty in a CL final.
Shouldn't park in handicap spaces even if you can afford the fine, eh?

  113. Hank - its NOt because you are rubbish (perish the thought!)

Its so you can delete the post if you change your mind.

In case in the cold light of day you decide the post you typed last night when pissed out of your brains is just too embarrassing!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Hank - you always have a dustbin by your posts. We all do. You can bin your own posts. I can bin everyone's posts, should I choose. I choose not to. Though, I'm starting to think I'd bin BTH if he ever showed up here. Wanker.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I've got one under my posts too. (but its only visible on my screen).

    ReplyDelete
  116. Well, as a Merengue I'm not having much fun. What a shameful performance. Well done Barça though...

    ReplyDelete
  117. Hi martillo - what a performance though, what a fabulous team, what cojones Pep has to play 4-1-5 at the Bernabeu. Was Raul crying when the 6th goal went in?!

Thanks all for the explanation about the dustbin. The dustbin would have been a real asset on Cif, especially the morning after, but I'm happy with the rubbish I post on here. Surrounded by generally like-minded people, I'm far less likely to say anything I might regret.

If Jay pops by, I've posted something on the "Jay and Ally" thread on Heresy Corner. Worth a read, and I must stress, as I did on there, that it is in no way a criticism of you, JR.

Annetan and Montana - how you both doing on the apple juice/fermented apple juice? Time for a bit more music?

  118. Well I'm still here with my bottle of wine, which was fine until my lad seemingly had the bright idea of putting some coffee beans in it as an "experiment". Bloody weird-tasting now. Hmph. I should confiscate his X-Box for that!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Confiscate his x-Box? Cruel and unusual. I'm sure your lad will have access to some top class lawyers, BB.

    Grape juice, annetan? Snap!

    ReplyDelete
  120. I've just opened the first one, Hank. Had to - andysays has just had a pop at me on the Talk thread. Apparently, I think I'm the Queen (Goddess?) of Cif.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Fucking brilliant! I just got the first comment on Hazel Blears' article. Short and sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Raul crying? I think so, Hank, but not as much as me. And not as much as Iker who deserves better. Bedtime...

    ReplyDelete
  123. I've seen it, Montana, and was tempted to open up a new id to respond. What he doesn't seem to understand, and it really is quite obtuse on his part because this issue has been done to death on that particular thread, is that there's the world of difference between posters with a history of generally constructive and on-topic posts and drive-by trolls.

I'm not sure what andysays's agenda is. If he's not a Cif regular, whether as poster or reader, why is he so hung up about the modding/banning policy? Let's be honest, the thread you're on is typically reserved for those who have been posting for a while and care about the direction in which Cif is heading. Andysays may have as much right as any of us to voice his opinions, but those of us who've walked the walk a bit longer can actually speak with a bit more credibility.

Feel free to quote any of the above. FatTony's still waiting for Seaton to turn up for our pasta meal. FT has ensured that there's a gun taped behind the cistern in the toilet of course.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Has anybody reminded Fat Tony to walk slowly out of the restaurant and let the gun slip casually to the floor?

    ReplyDelete
  125. As for being the Queen of CiF, well he may have a point.

Kiz is the (Greek) Goddess of CiF.

    BB is the Fairy Godmother.

    Waltz is the Wicked Stepmother.

And BTH is the Fairy Queen.

Hang on, we are in the phonebooth now aren't we?

    ReplyDelete
  126. Too late for that, scherfig, FatTony's cover got blown some days ago on here. I'd suggest that if olching gets invited on any lake-fishing trips he makes his excuses...

    ReplyDelete
  127. scherfig - nice one. I just added my two penn'orth as well.

Though why they are wheeling Hazel out after her last foray into CiF is beyond me. I wonder if any of her aides actually read her the comments the last time? ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  128. BB - of course they read them. You're forgetting that these people are as thick as shite. I'm looking forward to a leisurely read through the abuse tomorrow morning. That'll set me up nicely for the day.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Hank - you forgot that Sarka is the High Priestess. Gotta say, as someone who aspires to Bollyshevism, Queen of Cif sounds okay to me! Go to the Phonebooth, would you? I've posed a question. I suspect you might be able to answer it, but I'm kinda thick sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Lord, I've gotta get me over to the Blears thread - even if I only spectate. 113 comments in 18 minutes!

    ReplyDelete
  131. Montana - I've been to the phonebooth and deposited something there (-;

How you getting on with the cider btw?

    ReplyDelete
  132. Hank - just cracked open the fourth one and it's just kicked in all of the sudden. Didn't really feel anything 'til about 5 minutes ago. Now I'm feeling very happy. Damned thing about it is, I tend to get erm, 'amorous' when pissed and there's no one physically here to get 'amorous' with. Over to the Phonebooth I go.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Hank - where the hell did you put it? I can't see anything recent from you on the 'My finger's tired' thread. ??

    ReplyDelete
  134. It's bleedin gorn, Montana, dunno where..Have posted a new post but it's never the same second time around.

Does Kiz need some fresh air?

    ReplyDelete
  135. I dunno about Kiz but I just finished the 4th bottle and am sitting here with a dumbass grin on my face. This would be even more fun if the sprog weren't here and I didn't have to try to act sober every time he emerges from his room to ask me a question. Maybe I can make arrangements to have him spend the night with his grandparents next Friday - I'd say he's due for some bonding time with his elders. Just saw your second attempt over there. Replied.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Pffbbbt. 8:24 pm for me and everyone's gone to bed? Damn time difference.

    ReplyDelete
  137. I'm still in the phone booth and on the modding thread...But yeh, there's a hell of a lot of bleeding lightweights on here. And where the fuck's Bitterweed and Monkey?

    ReplyDelete
  138. I've been wondering about them, myself. Wonder if BW had a gig? Just posted a reply to you in the Booth. I don't think I made my apology very explicit, however, so let me do so here - I'm sorry. I hope I wasn't too much of a clod.

    ReplyDelete
  139. No need to apologise, Montana. I've replied over the other place and, having just seen BTH's latest effort on the modding thread, and responded to it in as restrained a manner as any free born Englishman who's drunk 2 and a half bottles of red wine might be expected to, I'm deffo off to bed now before I get my latest friend in pre-mod.

    Nite all (-:

  141. So you've seen ultima's post then, Jay?

    ReplyDelete
  142. Hank - sadly my grape juice was unfermented! :-(

    ReplyDelete
  143. Morning BTH. Thanks for reposting my deleted insult to you. Lucky you copied it and saved it for future use.

Any comments on ultima's fine and honest response to the recent shitstorm? Comments will be deleted on Cif but there are no deletions here. Myself, I thought it sounded remarkably like a little school-child who had been caught being naughty. A bit of tittle-tattle, some lies, some self-justification and a rather weak threat to tell the grown-ups. Not an unusual response for a 12 year-old, but a bit embarassing for a grown woman.

Any thoughts BTH? You could have the guts to stand up here and comment under your own name. You have been reading this blog since it started, haven't you?

    ReplyDelete
  144. I don't think BTH's up yet, after yesterday's marathon effort on CiF. I'm anon on here but I'm definitely not him or anyone remotely resembling him!
As for ultima, well ... Hoist by own petard?

    ReplyDelete
  145. Ultima doesn't seem to understand my point about choosing to have sex with someone you love because they need to be comforted(even if you are not exactly 'up for it'). She characterises it as 'appeasement'.

Obviously sees men as 'the enemy' but then we knew that dodn't we?

In life we all do things for people we love when we are tired or even when we are ill. Its part of being human. A relationship cannot survive if we only go into into it for what we can get out of it, there has to be give and take.

This why Ultima is so scary for me her for want of a better word 'philosophy' is based on hate. Its no better than the jihadis and uktimately just as destructive.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Anonymous - "yesterday's marathon effort". You're not joking. I had a look at BTH's archive. Between 01.05 and 03.05 he posted 60 posts on that thread - more than 36 hours straight with no gaps! Astounding.

I thought I spent too much time posting drivel, but at least I go to bed occasionally and have a life. That level of obsession worries me - time for a short period of abstinence, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  147. scherfig - I agree, it seems obsessive to me for BTH to be there so long. But he can be hugely entertaining at times!
annetan - don't worry, ultima rarely understands anyone's point but her own!

    ReplyDelete
  148. Ha Ha. BTH and ultima/varisbird are back. Apparently I should apologize to ultima for 'stalking' her and 'posting misleading quotes'.

Must remember to do that sometime. 2014 is good for me.

    ReplyDelete
  149. The thing about ultima's attitude to sex is, if a man were to announce that sex should only be about his pleasure, we'd know what sort of man he was, wouldn't we?

    ReplyDelete
  150. Annetan,

Couldn't agree with you more; doesn't just apply to sex, but Ultima; & to a lesser extent, Gilda, who we were originally disgussing this with on Ally's thread, are, as you say, taking am "us & them" stance on the issue.

They seem to be arguing from a position of, "If you aren't one of us & 100% for us then you must be an enemy & therefore are to be persecuted as an unbeliever. (I won't go into the fact that this attitude would appear to display disturbingly selfish character traits.)

This has, as others have stated on the WDYDTTA thread, many aspects in common with other forms of fanaticism, be they on a political, religious, or other basis, in that they deny all empathy for those who are not part of the same extreme group; & to some extent their humanity.

It also removes all requirements for them to actually think for themselves, whilst they are quite happy do claim the right to do other's thinking for them; fabricating conditions (such as "self-hating mysogeny") to justufy sucha stance, as dogma becomes their sole point of reference.

Sadly, this is one of the huge problems with Cif, as it stands, that such fanatics are given free rein to peddle their views, both above & below the line, whilst any attempt present a serious, well reasoned, counter-argument is likely to result in, either, a storm of abuse, cries of foul play or be modded out of existence.

I might just add something about this to the WDYWTTA thread, if I get time, before I have to set off for Scotland & work.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Should have added that BTH comes across as a drooling little toadie, who will back any staatement by the group he is wishing to appear to share the views of; can't do reasoned argument though, & yet, at times; such as with his ideas of what constitutes the most important part of a woman or his questioning, on the porn threads, of whether OP's would "allow" their daughters or wives to participate in the industry, his mask slips.

Well, I suppose he'll be as happy as Larry at the thought that Ultima wants to kiss him, after his marathon yesterday. Probably the closest thing he's got, on Cif, to what, I believe, his real motivation is.

    ReplyDelete
  152. The thing that makes me think varisbird and ultima have to be one and the same is that it seems a little unlikely to me that cif has two finns, both female and both barefaced fucking liars... who continue with the same lie even when they've been outed totally! Gotta be the same person...

    ReplyDelete
  153. They are on to political lesbianism now - Ultima doesn't seem to recognise that it exists!

Its been around at least since the 70's to my certain knowlege.

BTH has quoted Julie Bindel who has defined it perfectly.

Its one of the dottier ideas that came out of 70's feminism imho.

Nothing at all against lesbianism but the notion that the only way women can be liberated is to live separately from men is dotty.

Its also a distortion of marxist theory because getting rid of the ruling class doesn't necessarily mean getting rid of the people in it just the system that allows class to exist.

When discussing feminism its a non starter! If you get rid of the class system the ruling class and the working class are replaced by - people.

You can't turn men into women but you can treat everyone with equal respect because we are all people.

Rad fems and separatist fems seem to want to get rid of men as they see men(people) as the problem not patriarchy (a system).

    ReplyDelete
  154. It's rather odd than one of the most vocal feminists on the threads has never even heard of a feminist ideology that is over 40 years old.

    ReplyDelete
  155. She'll tell him she wants to kiss him online, but if they met offline and he tried to hold her to it she'd call that "entitlement". He'd probably think that was perfectly reasonble and deserved.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Hmmm - currently on my fifth CiF account (one of which only lasted for one comment), I came close to getting banned from this one too.

However, seems I've been allowed off the naughty step ... I just posted a comment and it didn't go into premod.

    sirhm.

    ReplyDelete
  157. OK - seventeenth time lucky (and I think I have worked out why my login wasn't working!)

Good Morning - well, it has taken me so long to post that it's afternoon now but anyway.

Must have been something to do with cookies - no, not Kiz's sadly. Anyway, roast beef for lunch so no cookies allowed.

As for UT and her "harassed into commenting" line, it is wearing a little thin. God I hate professional victims.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Well, she's done an excellent job of exposing her own dishonesty and bigotry, not to mention her ignorance. Asking robbo if he had made up the term 'political lesbianism' was unbelievable.

"One might even say there is an offensive undertone that implies that being a lesbian is a political statement...how does "political homosexuality" sound to you? How about "political heterosexuality"? Bizarre."

Oops, no cookies from the sisters for that little faux pas.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Morning peeps.
Hank, had a gig last nitght, then a pal in big a crisis when I got back at one, so was off duty... soz.

Jay, yes that's one of my band's recordings, pretty low-fi... heh heh...

    Come on Liverpool !

And I see FightThe Poor has joined us.

    ReplyDelete
  160. G'day, Bitterweed. If you miss scrapping and hostile debate, I'll toss this into the mix.

Which will be more disappointing for all right -thinking people? That Liverpool win and therefore still have a very theoretical chance of winning the league or that Newcastle win and therefore still have a very theoretical chance of avoiding much deserved relegation?

It's a tough one! Myself, I'd like them both to lose, but will predict 2-0 to the scousers.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Oh, and leave FightThePoor alone. He's just lonely.

  162. annetan24
My girflriend went to a civil partnership last year celebration of two very longstanding close friends of hers. No men were invited to this 'wedding'. And in fact my partner was the only woman allowed who isn't a lesbian because she had had such a close relationship with the couple when they were at uni in Sheffield in the mid 80s, doing social work related courses and Masters Degrees.
So this old concept political lesbianism still applies then. They used to hav wimmins nights at the Leadmill, and dyke mates of hers often tried to 'convert' her to lesbianism, to 'admit' she was one. The bonds, support and closeness of those relationships, she tells me to this day, were incredible, alost indescribably intense.

But at the 'wedding' last summer, she says she became bored. All the guests were just doing boring couply stuff and chatting boring couply chat. They just happened to be dykes. And no men allowed.

    ReplyDelete

The United scum have this one sewn up I'm afraid. But I predict a Liverpool win. Newcastle going down is not something I actually relish... !

Back soon with a proper comment...

    ReplyDelete
  168. Interesting to eventually find my way in, only to discover some of you are already talking about me.

I suspect this particular party’s nearly over, but hopefully someone will eventually read this.

Montana (I’m hoping we can be on first name terms over here):

If you go back and look at my initial post to you on Cif (sic), you’ll see that I didn’t call you the Queen, or any other member of royalty, nor a Goddess, or any other kind of deity.

I was just trying to get you to clarify your position, and if I sounded a bit stroppy about it, then I probably I was. I value free speech above most other things, and I’m pretty pissed off about how Cif is working too.

I accept I am relatively new and certainly don’t have the emotional involvement or depth of knowledge of who’s who and what’s what that you (that’s you plural again) do. I think I’m pretty much up to speed with ultimathule now though...

Although I’ve only been contributing online for a few months, I feel I have a strong and long-standing interest and emotional involvement in the Guardian, or at least in what I think it could and should be.

That’s why I’m bothering to comment there (and here) and argue against all banning and against all heavy handed and arbitrary moderation. Even in the short time I’ve been there, it’s happened to me.

I’ve been deleted twice, and although I understand why, I’m still annoyed about it. But what I find far worse is the times (don’t know how many) my comments have been “disappeared”, usually when I’ve tried to challenge racism etc.

I don’t want any comments to be removed, even those from drive-by trolls, I want them all to remain so that people can be given the rope to hang themselves as they so richly deserve and so they can be challenged as I’m sure we are all capable of doing if the moderators give us a chance.

If I have anything worthy of being called an agenda, HankScorpio, that’s what it is; I hope I’m not being too obtuse. If any of you want to (if any of you are that bothered, I guess) check out my collected comments back on Cif, I hope it’ll give you some idea where I’m coming from.

Montana, if I remember correctly you suggested we were in pretty much total agreement and offered to kiss and make up. Even though I kind of brushed you off before, I’d like to agree with your suggestion and take up your offer, at least metaphorically.

I’m still in two minds about staying at Cif in the long term, but I’m glad I’ve found a refuge to visit if necessary. I suspect I’ll feel rather more welcome here than I was there, even if there’s more football-related chat than I’d like.

  171. And Andrew there isn't just talk of football here.. although the reprobates who hang out in the wee hours of a weekend (never me.. I'm a good girl)talk about all sorts and quite often get into a lot of you tubing too... But during normal hours some of us can be quite sensible (I think?)
And by the way folks its not ME giving out cookies... It's me being given them as reward for collusion.. DUH!

  172. Bitterweed, bit of a shame I suppose, but it might be the best thing for the club. Of course, on the negative side, that wanker Shearer might go back to the Beeb. More incisive football analysis -'tha ball's cum in fra the left, the lad's got 'is 'ead tae it. It's a goool!'
    Can't fuckin' wait.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Well, I'm happy enough with that result, chaps - although it isn't going to make a whole lot of difference to us.

Andy - good post on the "What do you want.." thread, btw.

  174. BeautifulBurnout and Kizbot: thanks for the welcome.

No deletions and fab people; what’s not to like?

I realise there’s more than just football on offer as extracurricular stuff here too, Kizbot, I’ve read all 180 posts on this thread, and you all sound like interesting well-rounded individuals.

What I’d really like to know now though is this: does Montana really have a farm, or was her offering it in a bet just a figure of speech?

Bitethehand is still struggling on manfully (are you sure it’s a he?) on WDYWTTA by the way, but I think his slip is starting to show.

  175. Welcome, andy. Hope you like it here.

I see you've decided to go head to head with BTH on the whaddya thread. Good luck with that - he'll be right up your arse disputing the definition, meaning and possible interpretations of every few words you write. eg. "he doesn't define what he means by 'oriented towards'." And he never stops. He is the undisputed queen of relentless pedantry. I fear that that he has already marked your card as a misogynist oppressor of women, so expect old and out of context comments to be wheeled out and misused, and snide side-swipes at random times. And you've already admitted to sex with a woman, so that makes it even worse. If you can post continuously without sleep for about 2 days, you might wear him down, but I've never seen it happen.

It's not grown-up and it's not clever, but I find swearing a bit about it here is a lot more fun. You could try that instead.

Anyway, maybe we'll have a nice footie blog just for you, and you can tell us how sad and hopeless that is and we'll have a laugh and use industrial language. :o) It's all very cathartic, innit?

  176. Wasn't it just BB... I thoroughly enjoyed it..
Oh and btw just been over to Heresy Corner to read the comments on the Jay and Ally thread.. Actually The Commander is not the only poster to be banned and then reinstated... OneTooMany is another, I'd totally forgotten about it (about 6 months ago?).... He also had to email negotiate, but it worked... So perhaps that's all the lickle sensitive souls want is a bit of email lurvin'?

    ReplyDelete
  177. Not having been banned myself (athough once in pre-mod for 8 days) my opinion here carries no weight. But if I was banned, I would not negotiate or lick their boots or say sorry. I would either walk away completely or if I couldn't do that, I would simply start posting again under another name. (Almost certainly I'd walk away.)
We'll see what the modding thread brings but I would favour a total amnesty for all bannned posters. No conditions.
If any poster breaks the (new?) rules, well Cif's sanctions would apply.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Personally I wouldn't have a problem with negotiating or discussing sth with the mods via email... but everyone is entitled to do as they wish on that score... I too favour a full amnesty. And I'll be lobbying for it when the damned thread goes up...

    ReplyDelete
  179. Oh god I bloody hate it when that happens. I just did a quality rant on the immigration thread and it hasn't posted. I hope I remembered to copy and paste it before I hit post.

How many of my posts have been lost in the ether that way!! Jeez. They need to do something about their server, as well as their mods.

  180. Hey Andy! Welcome to the Thread (which is now the Untrusted - since that's what most people wanted)! My little strop above was after I saw your post in which you made reference to me seeming to think Cif was my own little world. I'm much calmed down now and, as far as I'm concerned we did the virtual kiss and make up thing last night. No, I don't actually have a farm. If I did, I'd sell it and move to Britain -- I consider Leicestershire to be my spiritual home (Theddingworth, to be exact). I am, however, 'farm-adjacent' in a town of @7k peeps and tens of thousands of cows & pigs. Well, the livestock aren't actually in town, but they're all around us. Pigs mostly in those vile confinement operations these days, I'm afraid. If they'd let me put it in the post, I could send you all the shit your allotment could handle!

    ReplyDelete
  181. Having read and considered all the comments on this thread, I now think I might owe Montana an apology (I’ve just offered one to someone on Cif, so I might as well do it here too).

Part of my reason for having a pop at you yesterday was that I suspected you were saying, in effect, “don’t ban Jay because he’s my mate”, although I don’t think I accused you of that explicitly.

Now I realise that you’re calling for all banned Cifers to be reinstated. What I thought might be nepotism turns out to be a principled stand for free speech, at least I hope so, and that’s something I’m in total, not just partial, agreement with.

So apologies and kissing and making up all round...

  182. Evening all, and welcome Andy. How's everyone's heads today? Have you been out for another crate of cider today, Montana?

@BB - on the "Whaddya Want" thread, johnniestewpot has just sent you a link to a rather beautiful Emmylou song. Pass on my comps to him should you reply, I lurve Ms Harris!

  183. good post from yeractual on the whadaya thread...

    ReplyDelete
  184. Yeractual has just posted a beautiful comment to Matt Seaton.

  185. Montana: overlapping posts again.

Thanks for that, and for the offer of manure.

Even if you could post it, I’d have to turn you down. Pig shit really is shit, even organic pig shit, which by the sound of it yours wouldn’t be. Horse manure on the other hand is pure gold, especially if the horses have been grazing on natural grass pasture. Don’t suppose anyone can sort me out with some of that?

Here’s a thought: maybe I could start an allotment thread to compete with all the football nonsense...

  187. Hi Montana,

Hank - yeah, I am really not a C & W/Bluegrass kinda gal, but Emmylou Harris is one of the exceptions to my rule (along with Johnny Cash and one or two others).

I have an eclectic taste, although dance music is the thing that will do it for me every time, but I was a total rock chick when I was younger. Emmylou Harris did a brilliant album with Mark Knopfler called All the Roadrunning. Dunno if you know it.

    ReplyDelete
  188. Kiz - great minds and all, eh? How freaky is it that two women thousands of miles apart would post the same thought at the same time?

Andy - no probs & no apols needed. I can see where you'd have thought that. Yeah - as I've said many a time - I just don't think anyone should be banned. The only time I really think it's justifiable is if someone is actually trying to incite violence. Even then, I'm not quite sure how that would be a true threat. I mean, if you're going to plan a terrorist attack, you're hardly going to announce it on a place like Cif, are you?

Hank, no more cider today. I'll wait 'til the next time the sprog spends the night with his grands for that. TBH, the "Just say no to drugs" crap they feed them at school seems to have taken hold with him pretty strongly thus far and he's pretty uncomfortable with me drinking. He seems to think I'll become a full-blown drunk if I have any alcohol at all.

  189. My taste in country extends to Cash, Gram/the Burritos and emmylou. Haven't got a lot of her stuff, although I've got most of her recent stuff. All I Intended to Be is playing now. Will have to get hold of the All the Roadrunning.

She's got to be the greatest duettist around. Love the way she wraps her voice around her collaborators, particularly Gram and the few songs she's done with Elvis C.

Don't mind a bit of dance music when I'm out. Have had a week in Ibiza for the last few years so can definitely see the appeal when the, ahem, ambience is right! Can't listen to it at home though.

  190. Haha, montana, that rang a few bells with me. Fortunately my lad went through the censorious phase faily quickly!

    ReplyDelete
  191. Well us cookie monsters tend to be on the same wavelength wildhack...:-)
And don't worry too much about a censorious sprog... they get over it eventually.. I remember when my best friends daughter used to get upset about her mum not being normal like other mums (she definitely isn't!)and we ended up having a right laugh about it and made a little art book called 'mad mummy' together as a gift for her mum... mind you, she still rolls her eyes about her mum.... But then she's a teenager...

  192. Oh, Andy - we're swimming in shit here. Pig shit, cow shit, horse shit, chicken shit, turkey shit, sheep shit - we've even got bison and llama shit! (Bison for the meat, llamas for the wool)

BB - I didn't know Knopfler had done an album with Emmylou. He did a great one with Chet Atkins -- can't think what it's called off the top of my head. What about Nanci Griffith? I think that girl's a national treasure, myself.

  193. scherfig: thanks for the welcome.

One of the pluses of being a Johnnie-come-lately is that there aren’t any old or out of context comments for him to use.

Having had sex with a woman (and it’s women plural by now) is hardly grounds for dismissing me as a misogynist oppressor is it? I can’t quite believe he’ll try that, but if he does, forewarned is forearmed. And I can pedant with the best of them, if need be so no worries on that score either. Anyway, he seems to have vanished for now.

    Hank: thanks to you too

Montana: No one in their right mind would announce a terrorist attack on Cif, because the announcement would get deleted and the message wouldn’t get through.

Mind you, I explained yesterday to TheMaskedPedant how the WDYWTTA thread had been hijacked by people droning on about boring old moderation:

“It's really quite simple. We jumped mattseaton on his way out of The Guardian on Thursday night, told him we were armed, threatened to detonate a bomb, and demanded he fly this thread to Cuba”

Now I think of it, he (TMP) went on about football too. He’s not hiding here somewhere, is he?

BeautifulBurnout: I think there might be a danger I’ll like it here too much.

Can I find some sort of 12 step recovery programme for internet compulsives?

  194. Censurious sprogs grow out of it too damn fast if you ask me. I have to lock my booze away to make sure mine isn't nicking it. And he isn't even 14 yet! I used to nick my folks' booze when I was 16 though, so I guess they just start a little younger now...

  195. Hank, try and get hold of "Nancy Spain" sung by Christy Moore with Emmy Lou - definitely one of her very best 'duets'. She sings 'backing vocals' and makes the song a hundred times better. Outstanding!
