Daily Chat 09/06/09

Sheesh! Talk about slow news days... On this day in 1534, Jacques Cartier becomes the first European to find the St. Lawrence River. In 1928, Charles Kingford Smith completes the first trans-Pacific flight and in 1958, Gatwick Airport officially opens. Celebrating birthdays: Michael J. Fox, Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman. It's Heroes Day in Uganda.

  1. Natalie Portman is a prime specimen.

  2. And I live about three miles from Gatwick.

There sure is something for everyone in Montana's "On this day in history..." pieces.

  3. And I have friends living on the banks of the St Lawrence.............

  4. Hurray, Salma Yaqoob's up and running over on CiF. I've missed her insightful commentary on the state of the Left, Islam and, err, the state of Left, Islam, and Islam.

  5. anyone else feeling that the cake thread is a sacrificial one, aimed to draw fire from "more serious" threads, and that we fell for it?

  6. David Milliband has apparently said: "there are millions of people who didn't vote Labour but who desperately want to vote Labour"
    What a deluded arsehole.

  7. Very tired idea - wasn't all that done a year ago? And a tenner says that it was Jessica Reed's idea.

  8. Dotterel: Well, yes, actually- it did cross my mind.
And my goodness, did I split my sides laughing at the funny quips...
Sorry- no sense of humour today. My finances have never looked so grim. Life imitating art again...

Deffo. She showed interest on WDYWTTA and lo! it turns up. Makes you wonder about all those protestations of having no connections or influence with the mods.

I second the what on earth for.

  13. And I third it.
Never mind, scherfig. Why not write it anyway?

  17. Because I told Monbiot that while *his* ancestors were partly responsible for the British Empire, mine weren't, and to ask him if he minded fucking himself.

Timing: a rich kidcarping about all of us Brits being wronguns and getting our just deserts on the day after the BNP got two Euro seats was a bit much I thought. Nothing too strong really. I didn't even use the c word ;-) Still, fuck em. Fucking dweebs.

I thought you would get nobbled for that one when I read it. Not saying it's right, just saying it was evident what they would do.

    Sucks all the same, though.

  19. rogerhicks is nuts.

    BNP threads try my sanity.

    That is all.

  20. Hmm, just had a look at the comments on Monbiot's piece on colonialism.

So there -is- something worse than a BNP thread.

  21. "Show 'em the pigs..."

I cant stop laughing when i read this phrase now. It really is the most delightful daydream, Mandelson and Blears being given a horrifying tour of the farm by yours truly, beaming away merrily...

  22. "I want Blair and Mandleson shot in the face and towed behind a mid pacific supertanker, broadcast at Wembly on a giant hi-definition screen."

This idea is growing on me too, i must say. I liked an unremembered ciffers call to an unremembered MP that "I hope you get cancer of the face". That was another good'n.
