  1. I really ought to be in bed right now, but I've been sucked into watching a show about one-hit wonders of the 80s. Having lived in Europe for nearly 3 years in the 80s has caused me a couple of moments of WTF. Apparently, XTC and Madness were both one-hit wonders over here. I never knew that. ???

Have one of my favourite one-hit wonders from the 80s to start off your day. (If you can't listen at work -- come back to it when you can. That's an order.)

    Oh, heck. Have another one.

  2. Montana,

TomTom Club are great, I've been listening to them a lot lately.

XTC are bloody brilliant as well- Love on a farmboy's wages, Generals and Majors, Dear God, Making plans for Nigel etc etc.

One of the great underrated bands of the 80's. Along with Talk Talk.

    gandolfo,

just saw your post last night about the PVV. Six out of the 24 PVV MP's have shall we say 'previous'- assault, sexual offences, beating their wives and financial irregularities- the kind of behaviour that Wilders said his party would crack down on during the election campaign. And another two have been caught lying about their past this week.

On a more serious topic, who the fuck has got, in their "armchair", the time and resource, let alone the political clout and media presence to effectively replace the Audit Commission ?

  6. bitterweed - maybe the recent helen disney article, where BTL clocked her PR / paid shill role pretty much immediately, was a clever testing programme to see if an audit role could be safely handed over to Cif.

From the Torygraph - "Mr Cameron told a committee of MPs: "There is a debate I think we ought to have – obviously not knowing what the date is yet – but whether there ought to be a bank holiday. I think if it's in the middle of the week it would be a very good idea to have a bank holiday."

I'd like to be a fly on the wall at the internal government debate on that one . The unintended consequence of freeing up millions of people for a special day could be 'interesting' in certain circumstances. Street parties ... who knows where we will be next year ...

  20. Hi La Rit -- as I mentioned last night, he's had one legal threat, and you'd think they wouldn't bother if he was a pure tinfoil-hatter, which he ain't. The inside griff on the German-Irish axis fits in so well with news we had from insider witnesses on the Rating Agencies/ mortgage salespeople/trading rooms/backoffices/ etcetc/ back in 2008.

Another of my favourite bloggers who is even more on fire than usual is georgewashington2

Reminders of US history in the Thirties, including -

As Cohen recounts, "Farmers who stayed on the land were responding to their bleak circumstances with extreme politics and lawlessness." Across the Farm Belt, hundreds of farmers would show up and stop a foreclosure sale by the force of numbers. Some farmers threatened to call a national strike if Congress didn't act. In Sioux City, Iowa, farmers put wooden planks with nails on the highways to block agricultural deliveries. Cohen writes that in Nebraska, a group of farmers "showed up at a foreclosure sale and saw to it that every item that had been seized from a farmer's widow sold for five cents, leaving the bank with a total settlement of just $5.35."

Well,I was going to say - "those tactics worked then but we're in a new situation/context, so we've gotta think of new ones" - but that's not the main point.

    Which is ?

What's different, and what's the same, fer a start ... Good Day all, and of course to Turm, as they say in French on these occasions --

  25. Dave - The stuff about the Farmers in the Depression is fascinating......I was wondering about people getting together to try and stop a foreclosure on their home in the here and now?

Years ago, when my Dad's health was in serious decline, he struggled to find work and was not able to claim benefits (because my Mum worked). They'd got a loan of 2,500 from Barclays about 5 years before for my Dad to set up a (very small) business - it went tits-up as his business partner shat on him from a great height - that £2,500 had become an unbelievable debt of £25,000 (with some very, very dodgy interest and creative accounting applied by the bank - more 'magic zeros' appearing each month) anyway, the bank had a lean on their house..... I am certain the stress of the harassment from the bank certainly contributed to my Dad's rapid decline thereafter, but he reached a point when Barclays were trying to steal the house and sell it off for £25K.... he had had enough, stood up to them, wrote a letter which said - "you get this house over my dead body"..... as it turned out, when he did die, 2 weeks after the funeral, Barclays came after my Mum for another £20K - EVEN THOUGH SHE HAD MADE A FULL AND FINAL SETTLEMENT of £6,000 AND they still retained the deeds of the house!!!

Anyway, I went after the bastards - the 'debt' was wiped and my Mum has the deeds to her house which she owns outright. It can be done ;) But the saddest thing is, my Dad didn't live to see it and it was , literally, over his dead body that the 'debt' was wiped.

My motto is now - 'can't pay - won't pay' Fucking, fucking, murderous, greedy, immoral fuckers the lot of them.

And it doesn't have to - bitethehand does quality not quantity.

And I have noticed that there's a mod who work UK nights who seems to look out for me. My guess is it's MrsBootstraps doing a bit of moonlighting as the posts are invariably addressing some of her more infantile comments, like the one today suggesting that women who report the crime of rape to the police are a "steaming pile of crap".

So what with spike/Tony Shallcross/backtothepoint telling rape "jokes" and MrsBootstraps and her "steaming pile of crap", this site is running the risk of becoming known as the rapists' friend.

I only had a quick glance and this is a drive-by, but isn't Bracken now a spent force over there?

He shot his load with a couple of ATL pieces and now just looks like a pantomime dame feigning outrage and concocting affronts in order to provoke the unaware or bored into an encounter in which Bracken always declares victory in the face of obliteration.

John Cleese, apparently, was given a part in a film and the director was going through his lines and actions with him. Cleese said: "That's not funny. <>I'll tell you what's funny."

The problem is, John Cleese is the only person who does not squirm with embarrassment when watching, er, John Cleese.

The world moved on and left him behind.

  40. My Fuck'em post of 10.52 was not in reply to and agreement with La Rit's Fuck 'em post of 10.48. (Tho we do agree...)

Independently, looking at the same data and personal experiences, we were coming to the same conclusion .

    Fuck 'em !

We all know the Why, now we have to think of the How, When and Where. Two days ago jennifera30 said --

" There is a weird feeling about the world at the moment, I have finally realised that just because something hasn't happened before doesn't mean it won't happen soon.

I can imagine people sitting in their houses just before WW1 or WW2 and saying 'It will never come to that'.

It feels like all bets are off. "

Out of the many witty, wise, informative, erudite, well-informed, even hilarious, etc!, posts here since, that one stuck in my mind . It reminded me of an autobiography describing how a German family experienced their lives from 1933 onwards and then through their very bloody War.

There is always time for some innocent amusement at various squabbles , much light relief ( I love it ) , but the underlying Serious Bizness is to Fuck 'em. Complete the following phrase --

" When The Going Gets Tough ..." .

Now I must reply to Ally on his thread , because there too it's a question of When and How to say Fuck You! to the different thick and greedy weasels who are connniving to reduce the quality of life for the vast majority of us .

PS . Modern 'Western' Society is so extremely complex that it seems impossible to find something simple and unifying to change it for the better. The people ARE divided, because many have actually never had it so good, not just a few thousand 'Fat Cat' bank staff. Anecdotally, quite a few of my young family and acquaintance are still getting 30% pay-rises..

Bof! As we say in French . A few thoughts .

The Midwest used to be the most politically radical part of the US. Kansas and Iowa were particularly so. Henry A. Wallace, a native of Iowa and FDR's first Vice President, was the most left-wing politician ever to hold national office. He was pretty much an out-and-out Commie.

  43. Hello everbody

another quick in and out for the moment.

Thinking about Turm and wishing him well.

    Re. opposition to evictions.

1915 Glasgow rent strikes - one of the leaders was Mary Barbour - organised resistance to the bailiffs trying to evict families from tenement blocks. Most of te families were women and children as the men were in the trenches.

There are reports of bailiffs being debagged among other indignities. Eventually the bailiifs refused to run the gauntlet - rent racketeering was outlawed by parliament and rents were reduced.

I wouldn't even describe him as a 'near-Commie', tho of course others would ! Just a fucking decent and honourable Human Being.

The fascinating and horrible thing is that people either forget or just never knew their own history . I have a crap book somewhere called " The Greening of America", the idea that the Anti-VietNam War mob would result in a New America .

I thought at the time (1970) that there was no automatic 'ratchet effect' , that we all can be VERY conscious of 'things'and then that awareness can just erode away with time and life-events. I see that here, a couple of months ago Sheffpixie remembered her long-ago leaflet-campaigns, but she'd got out of practice in the meanwhile . Me too, I did some wicked publishing in 2004 or 5 which the French Communist locals rather liked, but am out of practice .

It's all about a continuous process of re-awakening oneself, Camus and The Myth of Sisyphus, the boulder WILL come rolling back down that slope , and you have to just start yet again to push it back up.

Thank you, I realise your job isn't easy.

We're a reasonable bunch around here and therefore it's quite difficult for us to find someone to dislike when everyone else is reasonable too. Human nature being what it is, we all need someone to dislike every now and then, so trolling's a bit like cleaning out the sewers: a thankless but necessary task, and no one will want to go anywhere near you most of the time.

Of course, sometimes some of you get it a bit wrong: we want to be mildly irritated and have someone to feel justified about ganging up on, not be in fear for our own safety, but all in all, jolly good show.

    All the best,

  82. Hello

For anyone who is interested, selfmademan has now been banned. This is because they discovered that I have another ID on CiF which of course violates the terms and conditions. At the moment it seems that they will allow me to continue to post under that other ID, but SMM is no more (the profile is already deleted on CiF)

They also said that my comments to Brusselsexpats on waddya the other day "edged towards harassment". I must say that this seems completely over the top to me but there it is. I can't help thinking that she has some special protextion because, really, were those comments really so much worse than the everyday interchange on CiF?

So this is selfmademan, some-time import-exporter, bad back sufferer, long-suffering husband and father, and lecherous dodgy old reactionary goat from Weston-super-Mare signing out ... forever.

Thanks to those of you who have played along with his ineffable silliness.

    Yours truly

Yes exactly, she gets the same protection as MrsBootstraps. It's called the 'Kipper Award' and it's awarded mainly to people writing ATL who really believed their pearls of wisdom would receive unlimited adulation and uncritical acclaim.

Anyway sorry to see you go and glad I managed to read all your contributions before they were consigned to the trash can of history. And sadly the IT people at The Guardian seem to have modified the search engine so it no longer appears possible to search for deleted posts.

I wish, cos he is great fun to write. But the point of SMM is that he is meant to wind up right-wingers and pompous folk on CiF and since, happily, such rightwingers and pompous folk are rare on UT (I know that Bracken looks in from time to time, but not very often and, anyway, he's too boring to be worth taking the piss out of) then all that would be left would be SMM the would be flirtatious lech. 116. My dear Boudican

I think I could manage it once a week. True, Mrs Selfmade makes demands upon me of a similar frequency (she insists that I read extracts from the selected writings of Baudrillard every Wednesday night, when she has finished the hoovering) but one is nothing if not game. To be honest, Mrs Selfmade's swarfega-handed attentions (this since she commenced car maintenance classes) are beginning to cause remarks of a ribald nature at the golf club, but if I could tell the Captain that I have a regular newspaper column I am sure that that would do much to restore my falling credit in Weston's smarter circles.

I therefore accept with pleasure the official invitation to become a regular correspondent for The Untrusted (perhaps my column could be entitled 'The Voice you can Trust'? It has a ring to it!) I will keep my ear to the ground in assiduous fashion and report back to you next week.

As I have always said, an enterprising fellow will always find gainful employment and on that point there is the small matter of my fee. As a selfmademan I take a commercial view of these things and it is better to be upfront from the go get. My price for the weekly column would be a modest £2000. Lest this seem excessive I should remind you that I have my expenses to consider. And of course you will enjoy it that much more if you have stumped up some moolah.

I look forward to receiving a contract for this engagement and payment for the first column in advance. Cheques may be made payable to Selfmade Holdings (Guernsey) since, like your man Bracken I have never seen the point in complying with pettyfogging financial regulations (what, after all, is a little insider dealing between freinds? True, the FSA took a less lenient view but that only goes to show how unworldly these public sector parasites can be).

    Yours sincerely

  120. Unmade of MrsBootstraps:

I think that she is one of the consistently most interesting and laudable commentators on CiF.

Well I'm not sure I'd go that far although I'm on record giving praise where it's deserved. Her real problem is that she expects adoration - hence the name.

But her real crime is that she is a self-confessed censor which on a site called for very good reasons "Comment is Free" is somewhat of an anomaly to say the least. Indeed most people with any self-respect would be ashamed of such behaviour and do the honourable thing.

Where is Peter Bracken's whisky and revolver?

    You continue:

My impression, purely as an onlooker who has never had any involvement with you and wants none is that you are slightly unhinged.

And my impression purely as an onlooker is that in, what is it, two years, you've never posted anything that's worth me spending my time on. I was very surprised at that. Given the amount of time the people here have spent on me, how come I didn't get a mention in your dispatches? Says a great deal about my posts I think and indeed your passion, along with those who you excoriate, for the inconsequential.

Having said that I've no idea who your other identity is, and I just hope it's not your newsagent. That would be a disappointment.

As for me being 'unhinged', all I can say is that until you've posted your qualifications for such a diagnosis, I'll assume they're as bogus as your wife's vehicle maintenance certificates.

Why is it that so many of The Untrusted, of which you are an honorary member for your attacks on the entertaining but harmless who inhabit CiF, feel that they can diagnose and pontificate on people's states of mind? Two of you today.

So how does it feel to be in the same stable as Tony Shallcross, so devastatingly dismissed by kizbot this afternoon?

    Curious don't you think?

Maybe you could ask your Rotary Club members to suggest an answer.

Let me make it absolutely clear that I will not accept financial inducements in return for a favourable mention in my newspaper column 'The Voice you can Trust'. To do so would be to undermine the entire basis of my engagement.

I appreciate that your own career in the financial world has been marked by a somewhat lax approach to ethics and I have no wish to dwell on that unhappy episode. Nevertheless, I must reiterate that you can expect no favours from me.

  132. So where is Shallcross tonight after his devastating psychoanalytic analysis of my state of mind this afternoon?

Still sobbing about pretending to have been raped as a drunk 17 year old by "a naked very unattractive woman rather older than me (perhaps 30)."

Would it have been different if she'd been a beautiful burning with passion thirty year old?

Is that what drove him to flee that bastion of female rapists, otherwise known as Great Britain, for the sexually restricted France where, strangely, he was free even as a 55 year old man to leer at school girls?

Here he is earlier in 2010 (really) on a thread about a woman whose 55 year old husband leers at teenage school girls but won't have sex with her:

So when this 55-year-old looks at teenage girls, there is one problem and one possible problem:
    - his partner is unhappy about it,
    - he could be making teenage girls feel intimidated and uncomfortable.

That's two problems Tony but that's how you usually distort.

    He continues:

Answer to the first problem: if she's unhappy with the relationship and feels it can't be improved, then she should end it - unless of course she feels that course of action would be even worse (which seems to be the case for the moment). So no firm answer: it's up to her and to him to decide what they want to do with their lives.

So even if the schoolgirls are in danger from this man, it's up to him and his wife to decide whether she should warn the authorities about him.

Answer to the second, potential problem: impossible to say, since we have no information about whether he's actually doing any harm to the girls he looks at.

Looking at and even fantasising about anyone is not wrong or a problem in itself, unless you are doing it in such a way that the person feels harassed. While we may not share this man's interest in teenage girls, he's quite entitled to it as long as he doesn't harm them. You may find it distasteful, but that's your problem, not his.

A little live and let live, please, people.

...we have no information about whether he's actually doing any harm to the girls he looks at.

We have vast tomes of evidence that young girls don't want men old enough to be their grandfathers, who think they're god's gift to absolute sexual attraction, to be leering at them.

But men like Tony Shallcross seem to think it's ok.

I have no interest at all in these peculiar and pointles battels you seem obsessed with.

Oh how I would love to say that obsession is my middle name. But other than being obsessed with anything other than the injustice of States whose servants defy the very essence of democracy, frankly I take life as it comes - and it comes pretty good, and increasingly so.

But I'm really disappointed that you can't bring yourself to compose something that might just send me quivering towards sleepless nights, or if not that, at least acknowledge that you can come up with something off the cuff.

And do you think, as a bit of an expert in these matters that JayReilly's exchange with JimPress this morning was choreographed last night? Or was it really off the cuff?

I've crossed horns with Jay for years, and indeed AllyF, which should, with you as witness, put to bed the pathetic repetition that MrsBootstraps and Montana are the objects of my stalking. They have a far better case but aren't making it.

And on this point I notice that Shallcross is accusing me of stalking him and I can only suppose it's a bit like the gamekeeper stalking the rampant stag whose past his prime. He really should concentrate on giving out his leaflets to the French populace, rather than pretending he's the ex-pat saviour of us wayward Brits.

They're both (Jay and JP) talented poster, indeed to some extent I see Jay as one of my early pupils, especially about paying respect to women, rather than dismissing them out of hand, a lesson that sadly Shallcross has yet to learn, and despite Montana's recent run in with him, JimPress has excellent credentials, which in all honesty I aspired to until, quite by coincidence this morning when he cast doubt on the credibility of the two women who have accused Julian Assange of rape, with Jim having no more evidence for his position than I have in suggesting that they probably have a case, given the unprotected sex situation.

And Leonard Cohen is on BBC4 with some amazing musicians backing his monotonalism, and it's really quite good.

It's not the cider, honest, it's all the pontificating from certain quarters round here. It's contagious. Look, I can't stop doing it myself.

Right, I'm off to bed to watch telly and not smoke. And not drink either, although that's less of a sacrifice.

  155. Actually, I'm beginning to subscribe to this theory of bitey perhaps being more than one person. Today, his command of English seems to be "good acquired" rather than "native" and he doesn't seem to understand when the mistakes he's making are pointed out.

In retrospect and having read back...you're right..the responses take too long...sure sign of a 'polisher'...life moves on...the juggernaut fucks off to Swindon; and breathing life into a stone fuckin dead tire-tracked hedgehog that's been enjoying the gift of decomposition for 3 days is a thankless task...as I know from experience...or, rather, deduction..or induction..or whichever one says only baby Jesus can do shit like that.

Bu seriously, the accolade for 'the schooling of young JR' indubitably goes to the UTs most patient tutor, Annetan42.

You're quite right and I didn't have the patience of Anne Tan or the acceptance from Jay, but...

Here it is verbatim MsChin and I hope you read it carefully before you make another misguided accusations in my direction.

I can't be bothered at this time of night to mark the quotes properly so you'll need to read it more carefully than if I had. Sorry about that but - well you'll understand I sure.

Hi sarka, yes I know it wasn't your view but you paraphrasing some of JayReilly's post at 8.17pm, and hence my questions:

"Is that true? Does anyone really believes that? And who are those political elites, to use your words, more out of space aliens?"

But sorry for the confusion, I should have made it more clear.

    Comment on: Sexist feminism
    Bitethehand 06 Feb 09, 12:46pm

JayReilly, you protest that you've been misinterpreted, but you did write:

"In a society of true subjection of one group to another, the oppressed would surely do all the work (as in parts of Africa today where women do the work), and they would also be the first sent out onto the battlefield."

Now unless you have an alternative explanation, I interpret this as saying that because the oppressed are not always and exclusively oppressed, then there is no oppression.

    Indeed your new wording -

"i think it is a mistake to see society as a male construction, tailored to their whims and built for the express purpose of maintaing their luxury at womens expense."

    - says exactly the same thing. It's a case of all or none, but whenever was society like that?

You go on to say -

"To say men 'subjected' women, you need to do more than show that men had more power, and that women suffered more disadvantages."

So what about this one example?

'Before married women's property acts were passed, upon marriage a woman lost any right to control property that was hers prior to the marriage, nor did she have rights to acquire any property during marriage. A married woman could not make contracts, keep or control her own wages or any rents, transfer property, sell property or bring any lawsuit.'

Married Women's Property Act: 1848, New York State

    and

'The Married Women's Property Act 1882 and subsequent legislation in Britain ensured that married women had the same rights to buy, sell, and own property as unmarried women did.'

Until these changes in the law the requirement of inheritance through the male line also meant that women were totally reliant on men either for employment or support if they were single or on relatives if they were married and their husband died before them.

This is institutional oppression against women and in favour of men, enforced by the State and the law, unless you can suggest another explanation.

You ask - "Why, in your view, didn't the nasty men send out their oppressed slaves to the battlefields to die for them?"

Well I thought that was exactly how feudal armies were organised and operated, and it was landless peasant who for centuries in England lived in conditions approaching slavery who died in the greatest numbers.

    So any reflections MsChin?

  162. Ok listen up guys:(that's code for some serious shit coming your way)

In the short time I have been in St Albans with access to my twin sister's computer it has become clear that her part in the financial meltdown was the most crucial part of the process.

She has obviously realised that I'm dobbing her in since she just surrepticiously retrieved her fake Russian passports from the drawer next to where I am typing these words and is now frantically packing a suit case and rousing the kids to get ready for an unexpected journey.

However, it did not come by this information by hacking into her computer. As usual in counter espionage the revelation of subterfuge is much more prosaic.

Bearing in mind my sister is a director of an international management consultancy I'll put the rest of the evidence in dialogue for the sake of clarity:

    Me: "How was your week?"
    Her: "Really good"
Me: "who were you working with?"
Her: "oh, all sorts of people, we had some people from Astra Zenica and RBS and a girl from the Deutschebank"
Me: "a girl from the Deutschebank; really? What does she do?"
    Her: "She's in "compliance."

BULLSHIT ALERT BULLSHIT ALERT BULLSHIT ALERT!

Me:"err what you mean compliant in the banking scam?"

Her: "err... no.. that's not what I meant at all... err hello kids have you packed your teddys yet... it's time to go!

So are you saying I'm Peter Bracken again?

You say such lovely things Tony - you know I admire Peter's prose and command of the English language, as I've said that before. But for you to repeat it, is a little disappointing. I expected far more philistinism from you.

On the other hand, who fucking cares? G'night all!
