What a strange existence you must lead, Ducky, getting up at half 7 to quack endlessly on a blog. Simple pleasures eh...

  25. LaRit and Annetan both up too, morning all. Yes the duck is endlessly hilarious. As soon as i can find a suitable blog i'm going to give this quacking business a go, looks damn good fun.

  33. BB,

    from yesterday.

The EDL march was a damp squib. About 50 EDL marchers turned up. There was a huge police presence and yes, Ajax fans turned up to 'have a go' at the EDL. The front page of the main Ajax supporters website AFCA.nl posted the march and asked supporters to turn up to protest against the EDL 'Niet in ons Stad' ('Not in our city').

There was 34 arrests, most of them anti-Wilders protesters clashing with the police. Five of those arrested were EDL.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Here's a translation of the message posted on AFCA.nl regarding the EDL:

“Because we do not tolerate racism and fascism in our city, as in the past already has been expressed on our site, we call each AJAX-supporter with some balls on to next Saturday show that we do not agree with this demonstration. Gather at 13:00 at the station Sloterdijk and form there the trip will be made towards Gerneratorweg.

Note: no violence against police and/or ME (mobile unit; riot police), we only plead for our city, and in this case do not tolerate the EDL in our city!

Fair play to the Ajax supporters.

  38. Mornin all, The cat had shut itself in an un used bedroom and gone to sleep. Phew, he didn't reveal his presence until I'd trawled thru the gardens, clambered thru two hedges and walked round the road looking for his corpse. Just glad the aged blighter's ok. Housework & garden today, the powers that be want a bonfire built for friday, that shall be my task today. Here's hoping the wild ducks fly south... L8rs : )

bank hol today, no work! am off with the oisette to look at museums, then to try to engage her with the dvd of Smiley's People I bought last week. so, see you later, keep kicking against the quacks.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Turm - glad to hear the cat's OK!

  43. Ducky,

Let me guess, you're trying to get blocked/banned so you can prove a point about censorship?

Well aren't you a big, clever anatid? Have some stale bread and a pat on the beak!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think he's foie gras'ed his own brain.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Dot

On the money there I think. But not got the brains or the balls to argue his case. I've got two of my youngest grandchildren round here this morning aged 18 months and three - in comparison with ducky's contributions conversation with them is an intellectual feast.

I challenge the duck to a proper conversation - don't fancy it? No thought not.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yes, always a shame to see someone reach their intellectual peak and plateau at the same time and then remain forever looped in their one small glory.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Sheff,

Yep, reading the duck's posts I had a sudden moment of clairvoyance:

Some days, weeks, months or years hence, a conversation somewhere on t'internet..........

UTer: The UT is an uncensored blog, we let the idiocy stand so it can be rightly ridiculed

Duck, masquerading as someone else: But ah, on 01/11/10 you banned someone!

This is where we can go into two alternative versions, let's call them "ducks fantasy" and "reality". Ducks fantasy:

UTer: Ah of course, my whole life is a sham, all hail the mighty duck, for he is wise, and by p*ssing about on t'internet has conquered the world!

    reality

UTer: Ok, technically we had to ban that one retard canard who insisted on doing nothing but posting "Quack" a gazillion times because he thought it was big and clever!

  51. Morning all,

Dott- I was just thinking the same thing as your 11.03, except less, erm, funnilyer!!

Alternatively, we could leave him be, then agree to 'monetise' the UT for the duration of his 'stay', and then every single quack, duck etc, would be directly contributing to a UT fund, to be used for whatever we decide.

Whoever it is may not have made much of an impact, intellectually, but there's no reason we couldn't harness his considerable skills to, say, pay for the next UT get together....??

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm going to accuse the Duckhead of being Bitey, just so Bitey can get his count of UT baseless slurs upon him up to 401.

I'd be fascinated if Duckhead/Bitey/Job would come on here to explain his cataloguing/cross referencing system for exhuming comments and counting grievances.

Alas, BB has convinced him that she is the lead prosecutor in an Albanian mafia case, so he is currently prowling the High Court in Tirana, sleuthfully following the faint whiff of gin. So far he's tracked down Shane McGowan and a drinks cabinet.

I was bitten by a duck once, on the hand, therefore, QED, bitey must be ducky!

Council plans 'big society' reward points

For critics of David Cameron's "big society" vision it has been an obvious question: what would make hordes of previously inactive citizens leap to their feet to volunteer to fish trolleys from canals or look after elderly neighbours?

Now one local authority believes it has the answer: "big society reward points" redeemable in supermarkets, high street shops and restaurants in return for good deeds.

Windsor and Maidenhead council hopes to join forces with a commercial rewards scheme such as Nectar – whose points can be redeemed in Sainsbury's, Homebase and Argos among others – or RecycleBank, whose vouchers can be spent in outlets including Marks & Spencer and McDonald's.

  57. Dott,

I'm sure there's some sort of algorithm/psychological profiler that would enable us to target advertising in their direction.

Maybe personal dating services, 'specialist' magazines, for example, or, given the devious and cunning nature of his 'master plan', maybe we could fill the UT with all those ACME products so beloved by any cartoon villain worth his salt...??

…"big society reward points" redeemable in supermarkets, high street shops and restaurants in return for good deeds…

They've got that a bit arse-about-face, to be honest. It’s not that people don’t want to help, I reckon (at least in my experience), or necessarily want material rewards for helping – it’s just that they don’t know how to.

It's a sad fact that for the majority, “The Man” needs to provide the “framework” for the rest of the concerned and well-meaning citizenry to hang its good intentions on.

Funnily enough for an avowed atheist like me, I’ve got to say the local churches round us fulfil part of that role, asking for volunteers to help with their activities etc. Take up is good, at least according to my churchgoer of a wife, who’s the volunteering type anyway...

  59. There's a report today in the Dutch chip wrappers about passengers aboard a luxury cruise liner complaining that the ship was an hour and a half late to port, arriving late in Florida after rescuing two American fisherman.

The cruise liner Eurodam was off the Bahamas when it received an SOS call from a sinking fishing boat. The ship arrived late in Florida after saving the two fishermen resulting in a number of passengers complaining that they had missed their onward flights.

    Words fail me.

  61. Swifty

You're right about local churches, quakers and the like - the organisation I've been involved with that helps destitute asylum seekers was set up through them - not that any of them ever pushed a religious agenda.

The idea that behaving decently in your community may now turn into yet another arm of the corpocracy is horrible though.

Hanging about at work with nowt to do and catching up on Mr Quackers!

Sheff - that link to the students chucked off the flight: disgusting but not surprising. Criminalise dissent and they get to do what they want with impunity.

And yes, Dmisthesaddestkey did a brilliant analysis of how the cuts in HB in particular will affect working families, Paul - it is one of the 1,2,3 comments on CiF (although it might have changed by now). Worth a look (and worth clipping too).

    Sheff,

Don't worry, if they're piloting it in RBWM it'll die a death: the people there wouldn't lift a finger to save their own grandmothers from the ravenous bugblatter beast of traal, without orders signed in triplicate, sent, sent back, buried in soft peat for nine months and recycled as firelighters....

    ReplyDelete
  66. @Sheff/BB:

The churches provide the “framework” in this instance – and in a way I liken it to the much-vaunted “entrepeneurial spirit” so beloved of our right-wing cousins, though not in the sense they’d probably understand it – rather, it seems to me a fact that some people are just “doers” – whether that’s rounding up the neighbours to clear up the litter in the neighbourhood and take it to the tip, or give the old lady on her own a lift to the shops if she needs it, or the harrassed, car-less mother a lift to swimming with the kids, “no problem, we were going anyway”… it’s more about being aware of other people’s needs, I reckon, and just cracking on and doing something about it.

That's a f@ckin horrible story. Disgraceful how the airport security people behaved after they were expelled.

On a lighter note - remember Gwyneth Dunwoody ? She recalled in an interview flying British Airways back from South Africa once, after appartheid. She was flying economy, and had a black SA couple sitting near her. A white Afrikaan woman climbed aboard and saw that her seat was going to be next to the couple, and immediately created a big scene, telling staff she could not - and would not - sit there, next to 'those people'. She said "I know you can do an upgrade, you have spare seats I want it sorted it out now, and I'm not paying a penny more." Couple of minutes later the stewardess came back, and said to the couple - "It appears we have some spare seats in First Class. Would you like to come through ?"

'Quacking' story sir ! Also agree with you about Gwyneth Dunwoody. Was highly respected in her own right without so much of a whiff of positive discrimination .Apparently she once slapped Hattie Harperson down by accusing her of being someone who feels she's born to rule.

  76. That's an ace story, BW!

And Dot - I can remember a long haul flight on BA when my lad was about 5 where he was virtually kidnapped by the crew and spoilt rotten the whole time. 81. Good post by flatpackhamster about Luxembourg on that one AB.

"Luxembourg, a member of the EU, is a popular tax haven, particularly amongst the elites who run the EU. That it's allowed to go on operating as such whilst within the confines of the 'common market' is a travesty.

I don't blame Vodafone for this. They're using the tax structure created by our rulers. I blame the EU, the grafting Commissioners and Eurocrats, for allowing the richest country in the EU to continue making itself wealthy at other nations' expense."

No, you cannot entirely blame companies for minimising their tax bills, so some of the blame has to fall on legislators and, as with the Swiss banks and the £40 billion avoidance scam recently, the fact that they tend only to do what the money-men tell them - or what they know will not be met with disapproval in those quarters.

Of course, the fact that money is universally worshipped and taken as the, er, gold standard in determining worth, along with the fact that we will all soon see that corporate enterprise is the only pursuit with any value and we will all soon think it perfectly natural to see Oxfam style disaster adverts on television to which we will feel morally obliged to respond.

"Vodafone is facing a crisis and we appeal to you for help. If they have to pay the disastrous tax bill levied by an unscrupulous government, it will be a humanitarian disaster. The Swiss bank accounts of the directors could easily run dry without your immediate help. Dozens of lives could be imperceptibly affected.

"We need you to send whatever money you do not have, even if that means selling your valuables or going without food or maxing your credit card.

"Give now to ensure that the rich never have to suffer the hardships of the stupid, greedy poor wreckers who brought global economic meltdown and misery to everyone on earth.

"Just because they want a roof over their heads and enough money to feed their children should not mean that even one member of the idle rich should have to pay a penny of tax.

"So, pay up now, even if you and your children and their children have to go without.

"The rich deserve so much more than you.

    "You owe it to them."

  99. All right, m'lovelies, it is time to be making plans for this weekend's piss-up in Leamington Spa. The general idea is to start on Saturday and continue on to Bitterweed's gig on Sunday.

For accommodation, I suggest googling B&B's in Leamington; there are a load of them down (I think - will try to verify) Avenue Road that should be in fairly easy walkable distance from the train station, the gig and any pub I might choose; this last is still under consideration as I'm trying to find one that will be showing the rugby Tests!

Bitterweed and Hank may be able to provide references for the one(s) they stayed in before.

Bitterweed's gig details. It's an all-day/evening event (doors 3 pm), but get there early or you will miss our hero. Tickets 20 squid and can be ordered on line.
