Daily Chat 25/07/09

It has actually happened. Historic events and slebs so boring, I can't be arsed. It's Día da Pátria in Galicia. Dunno why a place that isn't even a country has a National Day, but there you go. Enjoy this photo of lovely, downtown Ystad. I used to be a barnflicka near Ystad. Lovely town.

  1. @Staybryte: In yesterday's thread, you asked about books on the American Civil War. Anything by Shelby Foote would be well worth a read. He did a trilogy on the war as a whole and has done single-volume books about specific campaigns and battlees. The trilogy isn't exactly a quick general overview, but Foote is an engaging author and, though I haven't read it myself, I imagine it would be well worth it. The companion book to the Ken Burns documentary The Civil War would be a good overview. If you're wanting knowledge about the war first and foremost and the reading aspect isn't so important, I can't stress enough what a truly beautiful piece of work the Burns documentary is. It was painstakingly researched and lovingly put together. I don't know if it would be available to you in a library or rental, but if you can watch it, you really should.

  2. Are we still talking about Polly Toynbee?

Maybe not but I thought I'd add my tuppence. I've been a reader and BTL contributor to CiF almost since it began but I very quickly stopped reading Polly Toynbee's contributions and haven't even glanced at one for over a year now.

    Why?

Because every single thread is the same unvarnished and shameless cheerleader for NuLab. This might be forgivable if they were particularly well written or interesting, but they're neither. It's like reading a propaganda puff in Kruschev era Pravda. Awful, pointless stuff that's hardly more than a space filler.

  3. Dia dá Patria in Galicia? Well in Spanish you may know that regions were in the past usually referred to as "Patria chica" (Little country is the translation that seems to fit here although it isn't exactly alright)Today with the arrival of autonomies in Democracy, the qualifying "chica" (little) was suppressed.

  4. Isn't Ystad where Inspector Kurt Wallander comes from?

  5. staybrite, the older sources often ignore the use of black troops by the Union and the reaction of the South. Good intro here

Great to hear from you LordSummersle and agree with you as usual-

'Awful, pointless stuff that's hardly more than a space filler.'

Ahem: isn't it what Private Eye calls Pollyfilla?

  6. barnflicka is a nanny - looking after the kids. Or 'au pair', I suppose.

  7. Oh and echo Montana on the documentary - stunning.

  8. Jose: welcome to The Untrusted. Don’t think I’ve seen you here before.

    Thanks for the language lesson.

LordS: Yes, I believe you’re right.

So that still leaves two questions:

    1. Why has Montana put up a photo of a town in southern Sweden on the day a region in north-western Spain celebrates its autonomy?

    2. What the hell is a barnflicka and how did Montana come to be one?

    Over to you, Wildhack...

  9. The Ken Burns civil war documentary is available for rent on LoveFilm - you can buy it too - bit pricey (£37) but it comes on 3 dvds.

  10. OK, so that still leaves one question:

Why has Montana put up a photo of a town in southern Sweden on the day a region in north-western Spain celebrates its autonomy?

    Over to you, Wildhack...

  11. 'Why has Montana put up a photo of a town in southern Sweden on the day a region in north-western Spain celebrates its autonomy?'

Because Galicia is noted for its bloody Abbatoirs?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Abbatoirs is it?

Edwin – naughty step – now!

  13. Yea - it's arrived!

30 years ago it was, like today, a sunny morning I was drunk sitting in a tree watching the dawn arrive trying then as now to make sense of nonsense I had just a few hours before seen my third born arrive. I was pretty well proper pissed.

He was my son Josia Amos. I loved him then as I love him now.

Oh what fucking joy - we are partying today

I may be gone some little time..........we is excited here in Yorks

I have it on good authority there's an Abba tribute band in Sweden, who play all their tunes death metal style.
    They are called "Abbatoir" apparently.
    Splendid.

  16. Best wishes Deano, to you and the birthday boy :-)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Bitterweed: now THAT I would like to see.

Forget “good authority”, we need links, and we need them now...

    ReplyDelete
  18. And here they are

Let’s not forget that MontanaWildhack’s name is a character from SLAUGHTERHOUSE 5...

    ReplyDelete
  19. Deano - have a great day - It's my baby brothers' 60th today too, so celebrations all round. My Ma's having a fit that all her kids have now hit 60 and beyond...

    ReplyDelete
  20. sheff: best wishes to your brother, and your mum too.

Don’t let her cook the birthday tea...

  21. You're welcome, andysays. LOL. I think I'll be visiting regularly from now on.

  22. I see that BTH has had a totally unprovoked petty little snipe at Montana on the Brooks thread. When he pops in here for a lurk, he won't be surprised to hear that I think he really is a prissy, constipated little fuckwit. He'll never change, will he? A truly sad character.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Jose: glad to hear it – the more the merrier.

Do you post on CiF? What’s ya handle?

And I take it you have some Spanish connection. Are you currently there, or just from there?

All questions are, of course, optional – I don’t want to give you the third degree.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Party on, guys!
Cloudy in my part of Yorks at the mo', but sunny in your world today, deano

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm very disappointed with BTH re: the montana post, I thought he was more of a gentleman than that ..

    ReplyDelete
  26. As scherfig already pointed out, a barnflicka is an au pair. I could have found a picture of someplace in Galicia, I suppose. Perhaps the divine Sr. Blanco's hometown, A Coruña. But I didn't. Ystad is such a lovely town.

Haven't been back over to Brooks. Can't wait to see what the fuckwit said about me...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks for the pointers on Civil War sources all.

    ReplyDelete
  28. MsChin - BTH is no gentleman. Would it be sexist to call him a bitch? I think his own 'mother issues' slipped out in that totally unnecessary comment. The guy has some serious sexuality problems. If he wasn't often so offensive, I'd pity him.

  30. Just from, andysays, just from. My take is the human being and any of their connected things like Nature, etc.
CiF is not for me, I'm sorry, in my opinion it's manipulative.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Jose: I’d tend to agree with you about CiF being manipulative.

All of us here, I think, are or have been involved on CiF, but many of us are unhappy with it, for one reason or another.

So we try to chat here about what we’d like to discuss on CiF but often aren’t allowed or encouraged to. It’s been a little quiet here today, but it’s normally a happy place full of childish laughter.

So how did you find your way over here? And what are you interested in talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  32. CiF is very manipulative mistress, but like a craven middle age burnout I keep coming back for more abuse, and more guilty pleasure. It's the sheer rudeness of it all that keeps my pecker up.

CiF is my dirty secret, my office fling.

    CiF is porn, basically.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm a feminist... I don't do porn!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wonder how deano's getting on, with the family party 'n all?

    ReplyDelete
  35. ¡Bienvenidos al Untrusted, Jose! And thanks for the explanation of the 'pátria chica' thing. I knew that Galician is considered a separate language from Spanish, so I was kind of wondering if there's a separatist movement or something...

Kiz -- c'mon! You can embrace 4th Wave feminism -- aren't 4th wavers supposed to see porn as an expression of their sexuality?

    ReplyDelete
  36. waves at wildhack... ermm really? I've no idea. Not too keen on porn myself... icky! Woot others do/enjoy comes under the heading of 'too much information' usually and as long as it doesn't frighten the horses, I really don't mind...

    ReplyDelete
  37. I've watched one porn flick. It was hysterical. It was Scandinavian (Swedish, I think) and the "plot" was that there was a planet full of women with no fertile men, so the women had to come to earth to gather seed.

So of course they ended up in Sweden in winter. In tin-foil suits.

Think of a particularly cheesy Star Trek episode with a much smaller budget.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Or Carry On Up The Jungle sans (mercifully?) Charles Hawtrey.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thauma LOL! I think I prefer my own imagination! ;-)

So long as its not abusive porn is Ok - a case of 'whatever turns you on' really! A lot of is just funny though.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Lord S agree about Polly that photo of her is enough not really violent but she looks so self satisfied I feel like thumping her!

Does she not realise how stupid she looks with these increasingly desperate articles about Nulab?

    ReplyDelete
  41. BW

Dunno mate?...I know what you mean but maybe porn's not quite the mot juste. I always saw it as more of a car crash. Personally, Cletus the slack jawed yokel kinda sums my relationship with cif. I eat roadkill...generally for breakfast, but since we're talking cif... in a risotto with wilted rocket, a nice Rioja and sickbag.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Goodnight everyone

    MF: enjoy your breakfast...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Mmm I prefer some chips and a robust fighting cider, but agree about the rocket. Exquisite !
Anyways, I'm supposed to be romancing Mrs Bitterweed so wil sign off now...

  44. Well, andysays, I've just opened a google blog and through it I found your address after looking up other forums around.

Politics seem to be today what mostly attracts our attention. I can see I am late for this comment because it appears you start a new chat every day, which is good. I'll try to keep your pace.

As you know Politics includes everything from the human condition through Nature (Environment), etc, etc.
