  2. Dia dhuit Eddie.

Must be that the dénouement to yesterday’s match was so exciting that everyone’s recovering in bed this morning.

Personally, I was a bit disappointed with the easy home win. I was hoping to see a tad more artistry and composure from the visiting “spotted-dick faced nipper” but he seems to have suffered a nasty spot of choking in front of goal... and the petulant, hissy fit he threw shortly before heading towards the tunnel was hardly in the spirit of things.

Not to worry, though. I’m an optimist by nature, and I’m sure he’ll be back to prove me wrong.

"Government advisers deliver fierce attack on work test"

"The government is set to ignore recommendations from its own benefits advice body, after it delivered a scathing assessment of the controversial work capability test.

The social security advisory committee (SSAC) had been examining proposed changes to the work capability assessment (WCA), a test introduced by the Labour government to assess eligibility for out-of-work disability benefits and now at the heart of the coalition’s welfare reforms.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) insisted it would still introduce the changes – set to come into force in March – even though the committee said many of them should be postponed." ....ETC

  5. How's she cuttin', Shiloh! From my finger on the Twatter pulse, I have learned the following. Drogba will be pissing off to Galatasaray in the summer. The student protests aren't dead, there are currently 300 British student activists in Paris plotting revolution. There is a brewing scandal involving a Lib Dem minister and a "big black dominatrix".

The last tidbit originated from a London cabbie, the other two wouldn't be from such an unimpeachable source.

Hope Montana's Ok Thanks for putting up today's thread Thauma.

  7. Yes, Montana's okay. She's just a bit too old to agree to cuddling on the sofa with her son before a thread has been put up. One minute you're cuddling and watching some idiotic cartoon that your son likes. The next minute, it's 4 am, the lights & tv are on, and the two of you are still on the sofa.

Turned off the lights & tv and snuggled back up with him.

Have a look at this picture. There's something very "Italian neoclassical art" about it. (Apologies to educated art students, you might be able to more accurately classify it.)

  10. Seeing as how self-employment these days is largely self-unemployment, today I got myself down to the local FAS centre (Irish Job Centre) and had a good old chat with a perfectly splendid chap there.

End result, a 11 week course/once a week/3 hours per evening learning web design. Good point: the government pays for it. Downside: it's on fecking PCs, not my beloved Macs. I shall just have to rough it I suppose.

For those who don't know, the bare chested man - Gattuso, head butted probably the hardest man that football has ever seen - Scotland's Joe Jordan.

  35. Your Dukeship.
You will be interested, well saddened actually, to hear of cuts happening at Glasgow university, many subjects are on the out, languages, social work, or merging faculties, ie histroy, classics and archaeology. Sad news, and also at the same time the university is expanding in to 'business friendly' courses- things to attract the £10000+ a year non EU international student market, particularly the Chinese, things like 'international marketing and advertising', business administration and all that bollocks. You see it a lot in Glasgow, and everywhere in Britain. Strathclyde have recently opened a shiny new expensive business school which seems to be largely composed of international students.

In other more interesting news, the job centre gave me details of an opening at Celtic Park as a football boot cleaner, although I didn't pursue it!

  40. Hi La Rit.

Not too bad. Had another CAT scan yesterday and will have the results tomorrow afternoon, so I hope I'll know what's what then.

    * * *

I see some Tory MPs want to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights, which would of course mean the UK leaving the Council of Europe and joining Belarus, Kazakhstan and the Vatican in rejecting European human rights.

    @BeautifulBurnout if you're around

Do you know just how withdrawal from the ECHR and so the Council of Europe would affect the UK's EU membership?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Spike - I understand that the ECHR is a precondition for EU membership?

    Could be wrong though.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Spike

This is not good news. When the ConDems have stripped away our public services and our employment rights, their piece de resistance will be to then strip away our human rights.

    ReplyDelete
  43. @thaum

Yes, it seems so. I've found this on Wiki.

Although signing the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is a condition for EU membership, previously, the EU itself could not accede to the Convention as it is neither a state nor had the competence to accede. The Lisbon Treaty and Protocol 14 to the ECHR have changed this: the latter binds the EU to accede to the Convention while the former formally permits it.

So basically, these Tory MPs are suggesting leaving the European Union, unless the UK government believes it can negotiate an opt-out on Human Rights as it did on the Social Chapter. That would appear to be more complicated though, as I imagine it would require an entire new treaty.

  44. Demonfreaker on the 'Cut the NHS' thread(Simon Jenkins)

The NHS needs to become an health insurance fund ONLY and stop being a charity operation, open to all comers (the dumb, the drunk, obese, lazy, drug addicts etc.)

He'd love me! I'm a pensioner, have arthritis, asthma and heart disease. I really should have the decency to die.

I bet this excuse for a human being has private health insurance and has never had a day's illness in his life. He probably thinks he's highly intelligent as well.

Probably thinks the dumb - can't be bothered to ask if he means they can't speak or have learning difficulties. If the latter what does he suggest - extermination? There is after all a precedent (OOPS! I Godwined!)

Gave up after reading that. Now I know why I don't read the Cif threads much now.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Spike-- Been thinking of you this long time mate. You've still ,I very much hope , got a long way to go to be as big a drain on the frog NHS as me :-)

Hey -- maybe the EuroParliament could insert a clause somewhere --

" Former employees of the Commission whose State subsequently leave the EC lose all previously conferred automatic pension rights, as these were acquired solely because they were representatives of a member state ( as well as being carpet-bagging nonenties - add invective to taste ). and the member state will no longer be contributing to EU funding.

Hardship cases will be considered on an individual basis "

BB'd do it better, tho may not like the 'retrospective legislation' !

Well, I'm looking forward to more of it , and the idea of McShame and the Kinnock Dynasty being less rich is a nice thought?

  54. Hi All

Best of luck Spike, hope all goes well for you.

Gattuso's antics were nothing new, he is sort of modeled on Robbie Savage. Well done to Spurs, they took it to them but I was shocked at the seemingly apathetic way that Milan played. Mailing it in perhaps. Even more surprising was Arsenal's comeback. Didn't look really on but they showed more grit than they are known for.

OK peeps, the pub beckons. Laters.

Oh, and Paul, that tune is a classsic!

  60. Good news, Deano, on both the health and the doggy counts. Does Mistress Heidi have the same extravagant taste in coats as Mungo?

    ReplyDelete
  61. BB Have had to rename her - Heidi just don't sound Yorkshire enough. This week I've been trying out Miss Tess of Whitby..... but watch this space.

As a 17 month tri-coloured Border Collie her own coat is beautifully sleek and shiny. But I've no doubt she'll fall in on any campaigns that Mungo mounts - she seems to have taken to him and he treats her like a favourite niece so it could well be two against one.......

You seem to have been working extra hard of late - don't overdo it......you don't need me to remind you that there's more to life than work.

Hope your dad's op goes/went well.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thanks Deano

Well, I have taken the week off work, officially, (although I am still bombarded with requests for paper-based stuff)to take care of my Dad. His op was yesterday, and 12 hours in theatre as they had to remove quite a big chunk at the back of his neck then rebuild it with a bit of muscle from further down his back.

Saw him today and he was totally away with the fairies to begin with, as he had been heavily sedated during the night, but gradually came round and back to his usual self a bit - flirting with the nurses. :o)

Will be back to see him tomorrow, then his partner arrives friday so will pick her up and take her along. Hopefully he will be out of ICU by then.

One thing is for sure, I will never hear a word against the NHS. His treatment has been amazing, and he has a dedicated nurse 24/7 at the moment. It makes me want to cry when I think about how that cunt Cameron wants to dismantle it all.

    ReplyDelete
  63. BB Glad the news is encouraging thus far.

There are a lot of decent/caring folk in the NHS as I can testify from recent experience. But parts of the system are plainly over-managed - the silly amount of paperwork that the fab nurse, who looked after me, had to fill in for what in truth was a simple routine activity was utter nonsense.

Talk about check-lists to help you fill in check-lists!

Anyways young miss I'm away to my bed, early call on the morrow - Goodnight all.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Whizz-bang 'puter on a big crane-like thingy so it can be position virtually anywhere in the room in the Marsden ICU, Deano. Dad's room looks like an ops room in NASA with all the various bits of machinery and screens. And all on the NHS. I am totally blown away by it all.

I am going to attempt the stairs myself, now, Deano. NN xx

I've been woken up by my upstairs neighbour's beautiful teen daughter whose bedroom is over mine in the building. She has her alarm hiked to Spinal Tap's volume 11 every morning at 6 o'clock.

I'd probably complain but every time I meet her, she gives me a smile that makes me melt. It probably means I'm a sad old bastard, but I cannot find it in me to growl at a glowing young woman who genuinely seems to like the world, even with me in it(!).

So I just balance the sound pollution against the glorious smiles. The smiles win.

Does anyone know how I can be twenty again now I've forgotten everything that was crap about that age? ;-)
