Time for a new post?

I thought I'd go ahead and start a new post to put more recent comments back up towards the top of the page.  (All that scrolling gets hard on an index finger)  However, you are all going to want to look at those last few comments under the first post - AllyF & scherfig had some really cogent points regarding the nature of this blog.  Now, I've been meaning to ask if anyone else saw the title for a piece on the Vatican's recent statement that men and women sin differently?  I went to Cif (I think on Tuesday?) very briefly at work to make a specific comment on something else, saw the title and thought I'll read that in a moment - sounds like it ought to generate some really interesting/fun comments.  When I saw it, it said that the article had been posted "1 min ago".  Well, I made the necessary comment & when I returned to the Cif main page - there was no trace of the article about the Vatican's sin statement.  Did they post it and then think, "Oh, crap, that's gonna stir some pots!" and take it down again, right away?  I mean, we're talking 5 minutes, tops.

  1. Yeehah! You're all in bed now, but I just opened up FireFox to go do something and right there on the front page - a lovely photo of Terry, Lynval & John! You may not all know this yet, but I love the Specials and am slightly obsessed with Terry Hall. (By slightly obsessed, I mean that I'm really obsessed but still sane enough to realise that it's a bit pathetic for a woman my age to be quite so hung up about a pop star and I wouldn't be stalking him if I were geographically capable of doing so.) Nice interview, but it does sort of rub my face in the fact that I can't come see them. The Guardian has made my night.

  3. The thing about sin is here:

  4. Montana:

To explain what happened. The "article" about sin was actually an online poll. When polls are first created on the CIF system they appear very briefly as an article on the main page, then move to the usual "poll" slot. They only appear as an article for a moment or two while the CIF operator is working on them. You must have caught it at that point.

  5. What are the odds? Thanks for clearing that up. Thought maybe I'd hallucinated.

  6. You've just reminded me of my favourite poem.

    I have outlived
    my youthfulness
So a quiet life for me.

    Where once
    I used to
    scintillate

    now I sin
    till ten
    past three.

  7. Ok, this is a bit cheeky I suppose, nominating someone else to do something. Think of it as a plea. After seeing monkeyfish's inspired rant on the Melissa M. thread, I'd love to read his 'my week on cif'. I'll take my turn later too...

  8. Actually, sod it! I'll have a go, Friday night - Friday afternoon next week.

  9. Yeah, I thought monkeyfish deserved a "best on Cif" for that...

I'll have a go in a few weeks. I'm due to be fairly busy until then. One suggestion: the week's diarist gets to pick his/her "best of the comments". Have you seen them lately?

They sort of emphasise the huge disconnect between the majority of posters and the cif 'party line'. I've often wondered about this; just where are all the stereotypical guardian readers? There really aren't all that many when you think about it and, even those who would immediately spring to mind as seeming to tick all the boxes usually have at least one hang-up which drives them into the extremist category on certain topics.

I bet Georgina finds herself ripping her hair out some days.

  11. I get to choose 'best of the comments'? Yeehah! I think I'll choose them frong among the high scorers. By the way, I thought you were off 'flying' a 'kite', monkeyfish.

Congratulations to your lucky bastards Bolton, Montana...

Oh, well. Sounds like it'll be a happy ending for me.

  18. oh yeah - this thread is sooo going to run out of steam soon. Why? You prefer a wider audience and friction, and this is just a backwater of self-serving justification. How many slaps on each other's back before you get bored with saying how great you all are? Maybe it'll take off - after all somehow somewhere the masons (and aren't they a bundle of laughs)formed a club about *values*. Arf!

  19. anonymous asked: How many slaps on each other's back before you get bored with saying how great you all are?

The answer is at least 500. We love it! And we need more wit and humour like yours - so please keep posting.

  20. Well I've just got back from being away down "that London", and would just like to add that anyone who wants to see how to deal with abusive posters / bores / trolls should really take a look at Ophelia Benson (OB) and Jeremy Stangroom's excellent site Butterflies and Wheels. Any out of order stuff and OB's into the perpetrator like a freight train. Well worth a look, and some very erudtie posts there indeed, as well as some great fiskings of the kommentariat's more outrageous 'think pages'.

    Heh heh

  22. As for wider audience - we could all start linking to the place once in awhile. I know I keep forgetting to, myself.

Meg Kane's thing about Alex Rodriguez & Michael Phelps has been on Cif for three hours and still isn't open for comments. Why do you suppose that is?

  23. hi montana,,would you like your blog name dropped on other cif/GU spinoff blogs ? there are several quite active ones with posters names recognisable by the posters here,,i would just give you links but i dont know the etiqutte involved,,and since i am sure some of these other places are aware of you but have not left any prompts for you to link up to them,,maybe they are snobby or summat,,still it cant hurt for someone to leave a suggestion here and there

some of the posters here might remember my old monicker on cif which was dropinbucket,,i dont post on cif much any more,,but i still read them a lot,,enough to know you got some solid contributers here

  24. Fireworks on the Binyam Mohamed thread today. Countless allegations of racism, Islamophobia, fascism etc etc. One poster (boule) even posted a "SHAME" list of reprehensible posters. That seemed a bit 1984 to me. Gave me a laugh, though. (Perhaps, on reflection, the Lord High Executioner's little list from "The Mikado" is more appropriate.)

A particularly fine personal insult was "I find it quite easy to conclude that you are a man without decency, morality, or conscience." Sounds like something Disraeli would have said.

Needless to say, I kept out of it - nobody's going to be dragging me out of bed in the middle of the night with a bag over my head for thoughtcrime. Must check tomorrow to see if the commenters on that list have all been disappeared.

Strangely enough, the list itself is still up after several hours. Those mods, eh?

  25. @3potato4 - Sure. We're not a clique (yet)!

And I have to tell all of you who lent me support over on the Beth Lister thread - thank you, thank you! As you may well imagine, it is an intensely personal topic for me and it's difficult to read some of the comments that were being made and keep my perspective. I'm sure you all know the two who were the hardest to take. Smooches to you all!

The link you put up yesterday to this site on the Tatchell thread has been deleted. So someone at CIF isn't happy.

Nice idea this BTW Montana Wildhack. I've not been wasting enough time on CIF recently, so I obviously need another outlet :-)

  27. I've just been moderated on the Baggini thread - "Thank you for your comment. This has been submitted for moderation." Granted, I called millytante an idiot but maybe the recommend this thread (to sarka) was a factor. Who knows?
