Nettles I will try. Fed up between choosing ...Paul

Nettles I will try. Fed up between choosing pain or opiates !

I am interested in herbal pain remedies but also
in social/religious movements. The temperance movement is an example of the alternative to the misery of hard work and poverty - all tied in with religion and reward in the next world. I am expecting the rise of such movements over the next few years.

These movements have always been encoraged by the ruling class for obvious reasons. The militant Franciscans who sought to overthrow the rich was , surprisingly, frowned upon despite its Christian roots.

I'm with the Faciscans but would probably draw the line at murdering bishops.

Peter

Strong alternative social and political movements seems to be time limited - by the third generation they lose their strenth. Communism for example - unrest now in Iran. Many attempts at alternative systems have weakened and failed. It is as though a part of a generation is bitten by a bug but the infection is not past on in the genes. None have provided a real solution.Lenihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01755748505260253288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1141707904735688626.post-59436139414178926182010-06-27T01:53:37.753+01:002010-06-27T01:53:37.753+01:00right, bed time.

My mother's family were Christadelphians (the provisional wing of the Methodists) and my dad's were nominally Methodists but drunks almost to a man and woman. My mum had a go at making ginger beer but it blew up one night terrifying the whole family and the dog.

Peter

The temperance thing seems very likely, an alternative to the demon drink. There was similar very strong temperance movement here in S Wales. A blacksmith from W Wales had a vision - walked across the south procliming his message. He was accompanied by a family known as the Taibach wailers. Some congenital disorder gave them odd gait and voices. Very much valued at funerals apparently.

social movements are quite fascinating. There was one next door to Mr Spears, the barber my dad took me to when I was little, and we used to go in there for a sarsparilla, dandelion and burdock, or draught Vimto.

At the time, a soft-drink truck from William Deacon and Sons came round to the house once a week with stone jars of dandelion and burdock and small glass carboys of lemon barley water or cherryade.
